~*~*~*~*~

He would never know it, but Ash Williams owed his life to a woman who would die centuries before he ever awakened from his enchanted slumber.

Her name was Ashley Von Lichtenstein, a noblewoman of Kandar, daughter of the lord William Von Lichtenstein and his lady Sheila, and she was perhaps the least noble of all the courts’ women- or at least that was what was said in tittering whispers of rumors in the court. A lovely young woman, at least when she wished to be, she bore all the looks of her mother, and none of her father; dark curled locks that fell in cascades down her back, wide eyes the color of a deep brown amber, a delicate frame to her lithe body that belied her true strength… No, hers was a dark beauty, a far cry from the light blondes and blues of her foreign father and his family, and a beauty that had earned her mocking as a child, in the halls of his home so far from Kandar. Many said that it was that initial spurning of her father’s court that led Ashley to become the woman she had grown to be; unable to be a lady with the other young girls her age, she instead rebelled.

Many others said that it was not the spurning of her peers that etched the young girl’s fate to be so far from what it should have been, but her mother’s influence. Indeed, her mother had once been the perfect noblewoman herself, before Kandar was struck with the horrible affliction of the Deadites that so laid waste to the once proud land. By the time she ...

~*~*~*~*~

In the life of a spy, knowing when to keep your mouth shut is one of the most important tools in your arsenal; you’ll hear a lot of things during a job that a lot of people would kill to keep quiet. A good deal of the time, what you hear has nothing to do with the job, so you have to learn to categorize and prioritize. What’s important in general, what’s not important- what’s important to the job, what’s important, but unrelated- what’s important to know, but should never be mentioned again if you want to continue living- that sort of thing. Pretty much any information that’s important, whether it’s related to the job or not, is dangerous, especially in a spy’s line of work. Some of the most dangerous information, though, are the things that no sane person would ever believe, even if you told them.

“Buffy Summers?”

“That’d be her- and ho boy was she a live one! She and her little friend Xander Harris- who had great taste in clothing, if I might add- tracked me back from that...

“So did you and Faith ever-” Ash cut off with a little wiggle of his eyebrows, the innuendo clear on his face of what he was asking. Buffy rolled her eyes in response, pushing away from the table to stand.

“You’re kidding, right?” Because she was so not answering that question, on the grounds of so not his business. Grabbing the book she’d been paging through for their latest research- the thing was useless, with exactly zero information about the big bad of the day- she started over towards the shelf to put it up. Ash, for his part, grinned a little wider.

He’d been having the same dream for months, and he’d been trying to ignore it for just as long; her slim body pinned to the ceiling, long blonde hair spread around her like some kind of halo, beautiful eyes staring blindly down, her full lips opened wide in shock and horror- and flames. Always, wreathed in flames, bloodied and still as death. He saw the same thing every night, and in the beginning, every night he woke shouting hoarsely, reaching up as if he could pull her down to him and save her, save her from a fate that haunted his family already.

His roommate Brady, who’d introduced him to her, had teased him the first night about calling out her name in his sleep, until Sam had told him roughly to shut up, then shut him out of the room, and he hadn’t teased him again. “Sam, I need to ask a favor of you.”

“Just tell me it doesn’t involve getting the Colonel to-” The jest died on her lips as Sam looked up from her desk to see Janet standing near the door of her office, a serious look on her face. It was an expression that spoke of possible trouble, and the scientist took a moment to wrack her brain for what the issue could possibly be. The sprained ankle Jack had suffered on their last mission certainly wasn’t enough to warrant that kind of sobriety, and she wasn’t aware of any other serious injuries at the SGC at that time- which left limited possibilities as to the reason behind her friend’s unusual solemnity. “Is everything alright?”

“I’d vote for ya.”

Jack turned at the playful comment, arching an eyebrow at the blonde leaning in the doorframe of his office, not even trying in the least to look like she hadn’t just been eavesdropping on his call. There was actually a mysterious- and suspicious- little grin on her face, her hazel green eyes bright with her version of mischief. His own gaze narrowed in response; usually when she got that look on her face, it meant she was up to something, and he had a hunch he knew what it was this time.

“Baby,” Ash stared down at the black leather glove Buffy was holding out to him, his eyebrow arching, “I’m more of a Han Solo kinda guy.”

“Well, not anymore.” There was a little self-satisfied grin on the blonde’s face, and without waiting for him to accept it, she grabbed his right hand and started pulling the glove over it, apparently uncaring or whether he wanted to wear it or now. “Luke’s the one with the neat laser-beam-sword, right? And a metal hand? And he wore a glove too, so now you can be like him.”

“I don’t know, Buffy.” Dawn watched with a critical eye as the glove slid into place under her sister’s touch- it kept getting caught on the joints and sharp edges of Ash’s gauntlet, and she would have to tug and guide it around those spots. “I think he’ll look more like Michael Jackson than Luke Skywalker.”

Han was fond of saying that every time Luke went off by himself, he got into trouble. Buffy was just ready to rename him Dawn, call every day Tuesday, and be done with it. It would at least save her the trouble of wondering from day to day whether or not she was going to have to rescue her friend/master before bedtime rolled around.

“‘It’s just a recon mission,’” she growled to herself, echoing the very words Luke had assured her of just that morning as she slashed angrily through the underbrush of the forest. “He’s a Jedi, he can handle a few Imperials! Of course he’ll be fine, no problem! He’s got it all under control.” And she was very, very cranky. She blamed it on the fact that she’d barely made it into the forest and safety, and somewhere- far behind her by now- was half a battalion of stor...

“We’re sorry, Mrs. Williams, we’re going to have to ask you to not bring Cheryl to this class or this academy again.”

“You wanna tell me why you’re banning my daughter from your class?” Hazel green eyes glared defiantly up at the ice skating instructor, small fists planted on an equally small waist, the blonde’s petite form practically radiating with fury. Behind her, for once, her husband played the calming party, large hands resting on Buffy’s slim shoulders, as if ready to hold her back if need be.

“Calm down, baby.” And yet, as soothing as he was trying to be, his dark brown eyes were glaring just as steadily at the man before them, who fought back a gulp as he seemed to realize exactly what he was facing. “I’m sure Mr. Tate has a real good reason he’s gonna share, right?”

“U- Um, yes, Mr. Williams. You see, I-”

Ash scowled as he punched at the tiny little keyboard with his larger fingers, and entertained the thought of just punching the keyboard period. Stupid little buttons drove him nuts, especially with one metal hand, cause it meant half the time he hit the wrong thing and had to go back and fix it. It also made him decide prejudicially that while there were some advantages to having come back over twenty years too late- one of which was curled up with her head in his lap asleep at that exact moment- the worst part was how tiny they kept makin’ things. Letting out an audible growl when he hit the wrong number yet again, he corrected it with a slightly harder than necessary bash to the keypad- and was rewarded by a little beep in his ear that startled him somewhat. Apparently he’d done something to turn on the gizmo- bucktooth? Bluemouth? Bluetie?- that was hooked there, and now the phone screen was blinking at him strangely.

“You’ll forgive me if I say I don’t believe in vampires.”

Buffy squirmed a little at the stern look from the woman across her desk; she was rather small actually, around Buffy’s size, but like the golden slayer herself, tough things came in small packages. Her short brown hair was a no-nonsense cut, arms crossed over her chest in a long white doctor’s jacket, and her steely gaze was fixed on the younger woman, hence the squirming. She’d never been fully comfortable with this side of things anyway- give her a battle and a battalion of girls to give a rousing speech to and lead, and she could deal. Playing the role of one of headmistress of the Jenkins-McClay School for Gifted Girls? Not so much.

“So tell me why, exactly, I should allow my daughter to attend your school.”

“Dr. Fraiser, letting Cassie attend our school is a decision that’s entirely up to you; we don’t force new slayers to join us.” See, she could so sound professional. Giles and Robin had both drilled it into her head how to do so- which begged the question of why her, and why not Giles or Robin, but they’d felt that an all gir...

She knew he was coming long before the deck officer commed in to tell her he was. She knew, because she’d been watching, and waiting, worried despite knowing how powerful he was. After all, she’d just ‘found’ him, regardless of how long she’d felt their connection in her heart, and she didn’t want to lose him so quickly. That was why when she felt that first, tentative brush of minds, one she hadn’t felt since she’d watched his X-wing jump into hyperspace over Endor, she woke quickly, and was ready within mere minutes, comlink in hand. She knew at least one other who would want to hear from someone other than the airman on duty.

“Han?” He was either asleep, or working on the Falcon; it was hard to guess at this point. He still hadn’t quite forgiven Lando for some of the damage it had taken during the battle of Endor, and he and Chewbacca had been working extra hours to get their ship repaired.

“Heya, Cher.”

“Don’t,” came a drowsy voice, turning both father and newborn daughter to face the bed where the mother lay, “call her that.”

“You’re supposed to be asleep, baby,” Ash said with a wince, cradling Cheryl Anne Williams oh so carefully in his arms. To both their eyes, she was beautiful, a larger baby- after her father, Buffy had teased- with a head of dark fuzz and the pale blue eyes that were typical of newborns. The baby cooed quietly, those wide eyes enraptured with the shiny hand he laid against her and chubby little hands reaching out for it. An echo of his daughter’s eyes, Ash’s own widened comically as he quickly pulled the hand away with something of a fearful expression, as if worried something horrible would happen if she touched it. On the bed, Buffy laughed softly, sleepily, and watched with a twinkle in her tired eyes.

There was a quick glare directed up at his older brother before he pushed up from the rickety armchair he’d been sitting in and went after the discarded novel. “Watch it, will ya?”

“What?” Dean was the picture of innocence as he took a swig from his beer bottle, and threw himself down into the vacated chair, ignoring the objecting squeak the thing made. “It’s not like you don’t know how it ends anyway!”

“As a matter of fact,” came the answering growl, Sam bending over to scoop up the book. “I don’t.”

“You suddenly get amnesia, or something? Dude, we’ve lived the things, why’re you reading it in some crappy book too?”

“Balderdash, Jack, there’s no such thing as vampires. There was a mission afoot, and she had better things to do than humor Jack and his silly little superstitions.

“I’m tellin’ ya, Em, I saw them with my own two eyes! They had flashing yellow eyes and fangs, ‘n they were sucking on some little old lady before I scared ‘em off!” His hand entered her view scant seconds before he grabbed at her letter and yanked it away, glaring at the blonde with what was almost a pout.

“Really, Jack.” One slim, delicate eyebrow arched up at the American, and his scowl deepened. “Vampires?”

“I’m not crazy, I know what I saw!” he told her firmly. All he needed to do was stamp his feet, and he’d be the perfect picture of a temper tantrum. It was a thought Emilia had to suppress, or risk laughing out loud at him. She was going to have a hard enough time as it was, wrangling hi...

“His name is Croque, and there is very little information on him outside of the Watcher’s Diaries of the time when he was sired, in the early 1800’s.”

A stack of the old books thumped somewhat loudly onto the library table. Quick glances were exchanged around from Scooby to Scooby, then up to Giles, and back to the books, before Willow reached to take the book from the top. Buffy threw a quick pout at her friend before huffing and reaching for one of the diaries as well.

“Croak?” she repeatedly doubtfully, arching an eyebrow up at her Watcher. “What is he, some kind of frog lover? He’s not going to throw them at us, is he? Because frog warts- so last season.”

“Oh come on, Buff, that’s just a myth! I’ve held plenty of frogs, and never gotten a single wart!” Xander protested playfully, leaning on top of the remaining pile, and completely ignoring the firm British glare being directed at him for it. “Besides, if he’s named Croak, it probably just means he ...

Several pairs of eyes flickered to take a peek.

“What?” she asked defensively, shrugging in way that she tried to make casual. “It’s not like I even knew until today.”

“You didn’t find it… strange… that you met this man at the same time we began to encounter these demons?” Giles scowled as he removed his glasses to clean, and squinted at her. Not to be intimidated, Buffy puffed up her chest and rolled her eyes.

“Come on, Giles, do you have any idea how many people I meet every week? I mean, I saved five people from vampire attacks last night alone. It’s not like I tell you about every single save I make.”

“No, but I would think that someone saving you should be something you might mention.”

A couple heads turned furtively, trying not to make it obvious.

“He didn’t save me, he just- killed the last demon!”

“With a chainsaw. And you didn’t think this was worth mentioning?”

Everyone in the library turned to stare....

Ash was determined to get Buffy to call him ‘king’ at least once. Buffy was determined that was never going to happen. It was, essentially, a war of two of the most stubborn wills this side of the Atlantic. Bets were flying around Council headquarters and S-Mart as to whether or not the ‘title’ would be given, and if it was, when it would be given.

“I highly doubt he’s ever going to hear it,” Iggy stated, the bored tone of his voice belied by the way he watched the bickering couple as he bagged up the purchased goods. Faith smirked and leaned against the end of the counter, not too worried about moving along with the show that was going on across the cashier area. It wasn’t like it was all that busy- Iggy had plenty of time to chat. “He doesn’t have a clue when it comes to women, you know. You should have seen him when he first came back to work. All bluster and brag, until a girl tried to talk to him.”

“I don’t know,” the brunette Slayer answered with a grin, not a lick of shame for w...

He was military, which should have been an automatic shut down for Buffy; she’d been done that path before, and that way held only pain. She knew that. She’d chanted it to herself a thousand times, usually right after or right before leaving or going into his office. She’d almost decided to just got wild and get some kind of tattoo of it, if it’d make it easier to remember. Or, easier to keep her heart from going wild every freaking time she saw him. Of course, Buffy wasn’t really one to go with her head when it came to matters of her heart. That was most likely why she was standing nervously just outside the restaurant, trying to gather up the courage to either leave, or actually go in to meet with him.

“Summers!”

The sharp exclamation hade her freeze, coming from a completely unexpected direction- behind her. She turned quickly, masking the uncertainty in her expression and replacing it with a cool, unimpressed look. She’d been going back and forth with him for far too long than to let him win ...

“Milord?”

A soft, questioning voice was the first thing Buffy heard as consciousness sifted slowly back to her, and she groaned. It was a low sound, deep with pain, and there was a splitting headache pounding away between her ears. Against her will, her eyes fluttered open for a moment- and a second, louder moan followed the first before she quickly shut her eyes and rolled over, one heavy arm moving to cover her face. God, her head hurt, and rolling over didn’t feel too hot tummy-wise either. The voice that had awoken her spoke again, something of a concerned tone carried within the words that were just soft enough to not make her head hurt even more.

“Milord, how dost thou fare? Art thou feeling well?” It wasn’t a voice she recognized- and what was with the old timey words?- but then, she wasn’t exactly in the best place of mind to try and place the voice either, not with the way she was fe...

Author's notes: Comics? What comics? >.> This is set post season 7 for BtVS, and post series for Harry Potter.

Buffy made a face as she looked at the stake she’d just grabbed; it was the oddest looking stake she’d ever laid eyes on, and considering some of the doozies she’d both carved and owned since becoming a Slayer, that was saying something. The thing was incredibly thin and spindly, hardly the width of her thumb at the widest end, and it was made from some strange kind of wood she was pretty certain wasn’t native to California. And the pointy end? Not so pointy. A frown slipped across the blonde’s lips as she handled it casually, flipping it in her hand with ease. Who on earth had carved this thing? One of the newbie Slayers, maybe, who’d joined them after the fall of Sunnydale? With the way it was made, there was no way it would stand up in a fight, because it’d break on impact unless the wielder was careful.

Tucking it into her sleeve, she shrugged and, for now, grabbed another, more properly made, stake to tuck into her boot. She’d show it to the new Slayers later that night, to make sure they knew how not to carve a s...

Summary: Buffy tried to warn him; Buffy Birthdays were never good. Ash was determined to change that, though, no matter what it took.

~*~*~*~*~

“Did you miss the memo? Buffy Birthdays are bad.” Hazel eyes met brown with a steady gaze, holding it easily as she tried to make sure he understood. Because there was no way she was going out for dinner on this disastrous day of all days. He could just forget it, and he’d probably come out the better if he did, because according to all history and logic, the best way to celebrate her birthday was to lay down and sleep all day so nothing could go wrong.

Of course, Ash had a mind of his own, and didn’t really take orders very well.

“Nuh uh, no way, sister. I’ve been getting ready for tonight for longer than you can imagine. So you’re gonna go into the bedroom, you’re gonna get all dolled up like you like to when we go out, you’re gonna march your butt out to the car, and we’re gonna go to dinner. And you’re gonna like it, got it?”

Buffy glared. Ash pointed. She pouted. He smirked.

Fine,” ...
