They could have felt his heart breaking or were moved by the power of his love or outraged by Buffy's rejection of the deeds done for love.

Have representatives from all aspects of love , God(dess) of unrequited love, first love, puppy love, blind love, etc

Spike may or may not end up with Buffy but will get a boon or reward for his love

Basic Premise: The Elders or some other person or power is concerned and outraged with the treatment of magical beings and the fact that all magical crimes are punishable by death. Because of this injustice some type of entity or evil, etc can, has or will be able to gain a foothold in the AB universe which will have some sort of devastating domino effect across dimensions.
