Challenge NameManipulating the Marriage Law - for Myself.
Challenge TypePersonal Challenge
Category Harry Potter > General > Drama
DescriptionBy this time, I think that everybody's seen at least one Harry Potter crossover fic involving the idea of a Marriage Law - where the Ministry of Magic for some reason passes a law permitting or demanding that the Pure-Bloods marry a mixed blood or muggle-born magical user, often indicating that the pure-blood can then run things as they see fit. While I'm uncertain where those fics got started, they hit the crossover scene by involving the Order using the law to gain allies, people who might not otherwise have the time or resources to place on an English struggle (where are all the other demonic hot-spots?)

My thought - it's very much a human-nature thing to do. Asking 'how can I use this law to my benefit?' is part of human nature, and there are lots of people who would take advantage of it, and not just to get and keep a healthy young bride who can't leave.

Why would only the light-side be arranging useful matches with people that we've seen in the Joss-verse? What about some of the other folks, like the Malfoys, like Narcissa Black-Malfoy or Bellatrix Black-LeStrange if they've just 'lost' their husbands, like Minister Fudge or Dolores Umbridge (who I'm sure isn't married), like Marcus Flint or Ludo Bagman? Why not rope in some of the less upstanding people from Sunnydale or LA? What about Ethan Rayne, Amy Madison (even Catherine Madison if you can un-trophy her), Richard Wilkins, the lawyers of Wolfram & Hart - I'd say they've got as good a chance of being dragged in as Xander.

I think I'd like to see a fic with some of the less moral and ethical characters of the Potter-verse arranging a match to their benefit.

1 - There is a Marriage Law being discussed, though it may or may not be passed in the fic, prompting Pure-Bloods who ordinarily wouldn't consider marrying someone whose blood is less pure to contemplate marriage to a half-blood or muggle-born, or someone with a verifiable magical presence.

2 - At least one major character of the fic is considered a 'bad guy' (may be female) in the Potter-verse; and yes, you may count Snape in this if his consideration is the good of Snape rather than the good of the Order. Examples include (but you certainly are not limited to) Narcissa Black-Malfoy (if you dispose of Lucius), Lucius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, Marcus Flint, Blaise Zabini (about whom we know very little, but was sorted into Slytherin), MacNair, Bellatrix Black-LeStrange, Severus Snape, Pansy Parkinson, Millicent Bulstrode (of whom we know little - she's Slytherin, and has a cat), Crabbe or Goyle... you get the idea. The main HP character may NOT be an original character.

3 - At least one person with either moral ambiguity or villainy from the Joss-verse must be present. Examples include (but you are not limited to) Ethan Rayne, Amy Madison, Catherine Madison, Rack, Richard Wilkins, the lawyers of Wolfram & Hart, the troika (Jonothan, Andrew and Warren)...

4 - The question of 'What's in it for me?' must come up regarding the idea of marriage.

5 - Things must not fall quickly and neatly into a nice, contented marriage and plentiful healthy, magical children - these characters aren't known for being benevolent and fruitful after all. For that matter, it doesn't have to end with a fruitful marriage with plenty of magical children, or even marriage at all.

6 - Make the ending fit the situation and characters. Please keep the characters in character, and please give an explanation why of all the possible candidates, why is that particular Joss-verse character being approached. Remember that the characters might have other ideas than settling down with someone and trying to raise a brood of children. And if they're rich, they can hire a nanny, or whatever the appropriate term is in Britain/Wizarding Britain.

Most of all, take a bit of pride in your fic and write something that you can be pleased to claim.
