| Description | Hi everyone, my beta reader Electronis and I were sitting around talking and came up with an interesting challenge idea that I thought I would share with the masses. There are several parts to setting up this challenge. So bear with me… Step 1 – Pick a character from the Buffy/Angel universe that you want to be the star of your story. It is highly recommended that you pick one that you write the most about. I also highly recommend you pick a series regular from either Buffy or Angel and not a recurring character that was only in a handful of episodes. The reason will be apparent later. I will use Buffy for my example but you can of course pick anyone. Step 2 – Get 20 or so small pieces of paper (cut them, use post it, whatever works.) and individually write the names of 20 or so possible characters to pair your star up with. (don’t worry you won’t have to actually pair her/him with all of them). Yes 20 or so. Have fun with it. Don’t just pick you’re favorites, have fun with it write any character name that comes to mind. The one thing to keep in mind is don’t write down a character you couldn’t see yourself ever writing a pairing with. Using my Buffy pick as an example if Buffy/Dawn or Buffy/Joyce squick you then DO NOT write Dawn or Joyce on one of the pieces of paper. Also if you only write het pairings then of course only write names of the opposite sex of you’re star on the list. And of course only names of the same sex if you write slash. If you can write either then write half male and half female names and have some real fun with it. You can get a list of many Buffy character names by clicking here. If you need inspiration. Crossover characters are welcome but don’t overdo it. Make sure it is primarily Buffy/Angel characters. Step 3 – Take the names you just wrote down and put all of them into a bowl, hat, etc. Step 4 – Shake the hat, stir them around, or do something to mix them up. Then reach in and pull out five names, taking note of the order you pulled them out (you might want to write it down as you do it) Step 5 – And finally the reason for all this madness. Taking the five names you just pulled out write a fic that pairs you’re star (Buffy in the example I gave you) with each of the five characters in the order you drew them. Some quick notes… No shortcuts either (I.E. no threesome/moresomes) just to get all the names out at once. The star has to individually be paired with each of them. This challenge would most likely really be friendly to PWP’s but if you can make it work another way that is fine. It isn’t necessary to write sex scenes for each or any of the characters. You can have them just kiss, almost kiss but be interrupted, or have the intimate moment implied but not described in detail. But the star does have to be clearly paired off with them in some way. Also fantasies do count. So if you were to say in the Buffy example include a Harry Potter character and actually draw their name then you could have a scene of Buffy falling asleep after reading a Harry Potter book and dreaming about the character, and it would count. You can also have Buffy fantasize about someone like Xander or Cordy or whoever too, or have the other character fantasize about your star if that works for you. The one other thing is that the purpose of this challenge is to both see what kind of interesting pairings will develop (Electronis and I after drawing the first time experimented and drew several other times just to see who came up. I guarantee you that if you write that many names then at least one of them will produce a pairing you never thought of before.) and the challenge of making the story flow from one to the other. That is where the challenge lies. Now of course you can add names for conventional pairings and it isn’t like we were there to know you actually drew those names. But if you were to use Buffy for instance and you wrote a story claiming to pair her with Angel, Parker, Riley, Spike, and the Immortal in that order. Lets just say it will be hard for most people to believe out of 20 names that is what you really pulled out. So there you have it. The making for a hopefully fun to write story. And I can almost guarantee you no two challenges will look exactly alike. If you would like to see an example of this challenge in action, or just proof it can be done Electronis’ response is at http://www.electroniszappa.com/stories/lafd.html it is a femslash fic so it may not be for everyone but it will prove it can be done. Of course as noted above your own response does not HAVE to be a femslash fic. It is up to you when you pic the names to put in the hat whether or not you want to have slash, het or both. If you do write a challenge response I would love it if you would let me know by e-mailing me at itsmedan1975@aol.com so I can read it. Also let me know if you would like it posted at my website where you can also find a copy of the rules. (http://danknight.gossimer.net/pickfromahat.html) |
