A funny thought about the whole way Xander was treated was it did seem to match up with when Dawn appeared. The monks did their best to make Dawn the center of everyone's life so she would be protected from Glory, but what if they failed to see or didn't care about the long term effects of this? Everyone's relationships and world views shifted so that Dawn was the most important person in their life, even if she failed to exist before hand? How the jealous sibling thing popped into Buffy's life when her life was already complicated enough?
And then Glory was gone and Dawn's absolute need for protection faded, her blood never seemed to open portals any more after that. Yet the built in need to protect Dawn at all cost still lingered, breaking up friendships and damaging people's lives. It didn't help matters that the older Dawn got the less she wanted to be protected, so she turned into a some what resentful girl who hated everyone trying to keep her safe despite her whole existence being built for it.
