Great work, short and to the point. It is very true to the characters, I could see Xander do that if the choice was needed. I like that you mention how he would prefer not having to do that, but doing it out of free will none the less.

And a strong impact with the end, where his willing sacrifice is honored with the removal / destruction(?) of the trapped evil. I guess all previous sacrifices were more or less unwilling, and only their "champion status" gave those sacrifices any impact at all.

well, i would be honest i say i think of all the scoobies, Xander is the most likely to a true champion.
not because he was choosen, which he wasnt, but because he choose.
that puts him above those who really had little choice other then to be involved, ie Buffy, willow (on the hellmouth, that ability would have bit her in the arse eventually)
and for all that, everything he does just has to mean that little bit more
