Nathaniel--or Buffy--is going to be heartbroken if the two girls actually reconnect. You can't really blame him for getting the wrong impression; everything that comes out of Dawn's mouth either sounds terrible or ridiculous or a combination. I probably wouldn't be excited about sending her home, either.

I have to admit, it would be great if Buffy finally showed up (with Willow and Spike?) and all of Anita's group were very very reluctant to hand Dawn over, suspecting her of Awful Stuff.... actually even better, have Angel come with (using Fred's knowledge of portals? Lorne's?) -- after hearing Angelus stories, just think of the reaction ... while of course any hint of Willow using (or being able to use) magic offensively would get her in Big Trouble....

Great chapter. I really like the way you protray Nat & Dawn. It's really nice to see him in a nurturning mode, gaining a bit more chutzpah as he steps forward to mother Dawn. You seem to have the charactors right on target too. Can't wait to see what comes next!
