Review of chapter "Safe as a kitten" from (Current Donor)Shieldage
Man. Good documentary piece. I hear that things had been good once upon a time, in the men's prisons at least, when prison population was low and job training was actually cared about.

Faith's POV is good. I've definitely learned some things and I'm very disturbed. I'm glad that I've voted for certain things and certain people that might \ that might have helped out and I vaguely regret not actively helping out / promoting things more often.

The restraint you have Faith showing is believable. Survival, after so long in a place like that... Damn.

This was interesting but it read more like a technical manual than a story. Maybe if you had told it more from Faith’s perspective and then gave the actual statistics at the end it could have given the story more depth.

Though I do applaud your lack of shyness in attacking a disturbing fact and the research you put into this.
Comments from author:
Thank you, yes I am aware it came off as a first year uni student essay.

I just suck at writing angst unfortunately. And Faith is not a self pitying character so I didn't know how to tackle it properly. Because I can't make a joke about women prisoners being raped by their guards. I have discovered limits to my own black humour.

But I just had to share these facts I discovered somehow, and so this story seemed the best way to do it. Also any stories I write in future I have a reference to come back to about what Faith's time in prison could have been like if she spent time in SVWP It's not my best piece technically and I regret that.

That was really something... to think about (and do something against).

Reality beats fiction every time.

Great writing telling the truth.

Guess you'll be dropping coins into the Amnesty International envelope then this year?

Thank you very much for your kind review.

Review of chapter "Safe as a kitten" from (Past Donor)Vesica
Okay, I am recommending this one immediately.

Very nicely done and a truth of what Faith most likely went through that we would never see on the show. What can I say? Human suffering doesn't play well in prime time.

Smart, accurate and if this doesn't make you want to run out and do something to benefit those around you - well, then...I just don't know.

15 out of 10 - if only I really could review it that way. Much love, Kiwikatipo. This needed to be written. ~Ves

Well she could possibly have been in Stockton the whole time doing art courses and being allowed to sell her work. (Stockton sounds a reasonable place and they closed that prison down?! Even the ex Stockton guards once transferred to SVWP or CCWP said they found the routines too harsh and the relationships between the guards and the prisoners too confrontational. Although the breakfast incident happened at NCWF with a guard transferred from somewhere else like I described.

The male guards aren't all 'evil', just human and perhaps I should have made more of an effort to get that across. It was the head of the guards union that was one of the speakers against shackling during labour, when it finally ended. Sometimes an occasional guard would break rules and take the shackles off when labour was in full swing. Other women got given emergency c sections still wearing shackles. On the other hand, I think an above average number of bullies are attracted to being prison guards.)

But I argue against Faith being in Stockton the whole time because of the weekend daylight visiting hours NCWF had.

See I could have written pages more but needed to keep it a story not an essay. Which I probably failed in.

Thank you very, very much for your kind review and rec, it's definitely food for thought isn't it?

This story (I can't call it fiction unfortunately) should be read by everyone. Reminds me of how important Amnesty International is for the world.
Comments from author:
Yeah, Amnesty International is my favourite charity. 'If I am silenced I will speak for you.' It is a comfort to know that organisation exists.

(I can't call it fiction unfortunately) I just couldn't make anything about that story funny.

But back to me writing about my James Bond and Buffy action figures blowing each other up now.

Thank you very much for reviewing.

Review of chapter "Safe as a kitten" from Cutiepie
Wow, what inspired that piece of depressing . . . darkness? I only read it because you wrote it, and now I kind of wish that I hadn't. =[
Comments from author:
No Cutiepie, I am so glad you read that, because you are the kind of intelligent woman I want to know about that stuff.

I was searching for Faith's prison number and found out NCWF really existed was how it all started. Read reply two down for info for why I needed to write it out.

See, female shackling during labour is still going on in some American states. And if the more people know, then hopefully it will be completely banned one day everywhere.

For example in Australia, once what was happening (human rights abuse) in the Woomera illegal immigrant detainment centres in the desert became widely known, and voting citizens started to complain about it, (and er maybe a few riots) the centre was closed down. Took from 2000 to 2003 to bring it about.

So cheer up and tell a friend and help change the world, because you live in a democracy. So please feel empowered now, not unhappy. Because you sound so nice, I just hate thinking you're gloomed because of me.

Truly excellent and thought provoking Fic. Well done
Comments from author:
Thank you very much, the statistics and the International Amnesty report certainly made me think. Mostly 'there but for the grace of god go I', and my life is bloody wonderful.

And yes, druggies and thieves are bad, but is being raped and tortured really necessary to be part of their sentence?

Well researched information for an appropriately sobering read. Even if the statistics listed are quite appalling.

Thank you for the story.
Comments from author:
Thank you very much for reviewing. I would never have known those statistics, if I hadn't originally been googling to find Faith's prison number and finding out NCWF actually existed. NCWF sounded good, classes for women, the guards on the whole seemed to treat women prisoners okay, two to a cell, what I naively expected from a woman's prison in a Western Country, but their visiting hours would never have worked for Angel to see Faith.

So then I found out about VSPW and CCPW and was shocked when I read the Amnesty International report on those two 'rape camps' basically. I could have listed horror story after horror story. How about the masturbating priest exposing himself to female inmates for example? Yes, believe it or not.

Amnesty International describes it as 'torture' what the women prisoners suffered in 1999 in those two prisons. A female senator at the time, who tried to improve things, said you wouldn't treat a cat or a dog with the lack of decent medical care the women inmates got.

And then this shackles stuff I found out sort of accidentally as well (I was looking for a photo of a Californian cell to describe) and came across a photo of a woman giving birth in shackles and I was wtf?

The whole thing disturbed me so much I had to write that story, because in the two times we see Faith in prison on Angel, it gets implied a female prisoner would be in the most danger from the other violent inmates, which seems false to me now.
