This is a good idea for a story. I think the Smith surname is 'plain jane' overkill, you could have gone with Browning or Smithers and have your character make a joke about it at least not being Brown or Smith. What is Mary Smith Winchester now, a benevolent ghost?

I don't really like the last name either, and I was trying to think of one and I saw that the actress who played Mary Winchester had the last name Smith, so I took it.

And I'm keeping her death and everything after it canon. I'm sure you've seen the episode "Home"? If not, then yes, just think of Mary as a benevolent ghost.
