Can I love it with the intensity of a thousand suns instead? This is just about as good a piece of heartbreaking gut-wrenching soul-destroying tragedy as I've ever seen. The fact that Buffy and Rafael love each other and their son but she still feels the need to separate them only adds to the heartache. I thought the ritualized self-flagellation of enduring a phone call from Rafael every three weeks was a brilliant move. It does a wonderful job of conveying the idea that on some level Buffy wants to hurt herself so she can share in Rafael's pain if nothing else. That's my take on her motivations anyway.
Purely as a personal preference I do enjoy stories that explore madness so I found Buffy's fear of somehow backsliding into insanity interesting.
The fear of her son becoming a monster is bad enough on it's own as is the fear of re-entering an imaginary world once you've escaped it. But I think you've intimated that the thought that truly terrifies Buffy in the darkest corner of her mind is what if her son became a monster and her Slayer persona reasserted itself? We all know what Slayers do with monsters.
This one has gone on my recommendations list.

Yaknow... I love the reviews that just say, "Good job, loved it!" They give me the warm fuzzies. But reviews like yours, that actually have a breakdown of the whys and wherefores of your enjoyment? They kinda make my day a whole lot better. Sort of like a readable turtle-sundae.
Danke

I thought this was fantastic- I'd love a sequel actually where everything comes to a head and we have a fluffy happy ending/ reconciliation.lol. But that's only cos I'm a sucker for pouring on the angst and then having a happy ending. Very good, I look forward to reading more. Please write more?
Looking good. It will need some more backstory than that, but I can already see that it will work out. I like the style you're using for this as well, very interesting. Similiar but different to your other stuff - always recognisable at least by the ending line where my eyes have missed the author name!
I'm sure I'm supposed to feel sad for Buffy but... Poor Rafael! I remember reading in the Anita Blake books that and I remember thinking then, "What a cow!" And now you've put Buffy in that spot..
No.. Rafael didn't deserve that.
Good story though. lol
