I'm reading this as you saying that 'John' is gay, i.e. this and therefore the main story 'Lesser Children' is or will be a slash story.
In which case marking it as such is appropriate.

'Lesser Children' on TtH is gen. 'Lesser Children' on my LJ is slash. Readers are made aware of that at many points during the course of the story. This drabble is now marked as well.
