Review of chapter "Waiting" from Azul
Review:
That was excellent, I think the best part of season 8 is by far the Faith and Giles arc so thank you so much for writing them so very well, I love the idea of them together so I hope there'll be more.

Great bit about the missed calls but I would sure like to know what the hell is going on with Buffy and Giles in the comics but well, as long as he has Faith around I'm happy and it seems he is too but then it's Faith;)
Comments from author:
I've only read the first part of the arc (I hear there's more). But I have been sad to see that Buffy seems to find it necessary, as she comes into her own, to lessen the power and respect for all former parental figures in her life. I've loved the idea of Faith and Giles together since the first episode she was in. ~Ves

Review:
Wow... that was amazing.

Not just the sexiness, though hey, that was pretty lovely in itself, but everything. The depiction of Faith's jealousy over Buffy... especially the fact of him ignoring Buffy while they were together making it feel even more incredible. I mean, Faith's fascinating, and an incredible character, but she's nothing if not a little vindictive. Even after waiting so long for someone she truly wanted, a tiny part of her must've been happy just for the fact that she'd gotten one over Buffy. ;)

I had thought about the Faith/Giles pairing before the Gigi arc in "No Future for You," which I loved, but I thought it was pretty much baseless until the comic. The Steed/Peel comparison made it definitely a more-than-possible thing in the future.

Anyway, back to YOUR story.

...It was amazing. Again. Suffice it to say that I will now be subscribing to your fanfiction.

Thanks for a kick ass story with my favorite character.

Baseless until the comic? Surely you jest. Hee hee - I am not sure my opinion counts. I remember watching Season 3 as it aired and cackling "Oh, she so TOTALLY meant that!" when upon first meeting Faith makes that crack about "If I knew they came that young and cute...". But I do realize not everyone was shipping these two in AU Season 3's or late Season 7/Post series. I mean, I WAS...but not everyone.

I was so torn about having those Buffy parts in there because I so want Faith to be able to move past defining herself in relation to Buffy...but I don't think she's quite there yet.

Glad you enjoyed! The comic arc has exploded the amount of Faith/Giles out there, but there still isn't much. If you ever get bored and go searching...I think I have 6 or 7 other Faith/Giles fic posted here. Like I said, I've been having these two circle each other for quite a while now. Thanks for a lovely and well thought out (and though provoking) review! There is no better reward! ~Vesica

Cool. Was afraid it might have offended you. ;)

"He's (Giles) certainly not a pure good guy - which has always been one of my favorite things about the series."

I think it would be impossible for any old Watcher's Council watcher to be a pure good guy - they operate in an intrinsically morally and ethically ambiguous area to begin with. Even pre-Chosen Giles, whom we know has fatherly feelings for his slayer, is guilty at best of working with an organization that commits faginy with teenage girls and takes advantage of their being drafted into an endless war.

Post-Chosen Giles thought it was "bloody brilliant" of Buffy to duplicate the Shadowmen's demon-rape of the First Slayer upon hundreds or thousands of unsuspecting girls around the world. He's not an ethically sound individual. ;)

Of course, neither is Faith, pre or post-Chosen.

*shrug* Of course, I'm not really surprised by Whedon or Vaughn's treatments of Faith in the S8 series. It's been demonstrated previously that Campbellian heroes aren't rewarded in the Whedonverse. ;)

Anyway: keep up the good writing. I can always scan past the post S8 Giles/Faith stuff. ;)

*grin* I'm not sure there will be any more of it. I think the comics are content to shuffle Faith away into a corner for a while. ~Ves

*grin* You kind of startled the earlier review out of me. You're an excellent writer, and you're one of the few Faith/Giles ship writers I enjoy.

"I think what we have here are two radically different interpretations of the text. I didn't read their interaction as blackmail AT ALL. She didn't want to, he offered something she did want, but at no time was there any threat if she didn't." - Vesica

Matter of interpretation, I agree. Implied threat if she didn't: she doesn't get a passport and way out, and the council leaves her stuck in Cleveland rotting away. Further, and aside from the blackmail, it sends a clear message to Faith that she's only really valuable in her assassin role. None of her redemption matters, the Council couldn't get her record cleared or her a passport because of her actions in helping to fight the First Evil, it's only Faith the Killer who rates that. What a kick in the head.

I don't have any real issues with Faith/Giles pairings per se, even though it's not a ship that makes sense to me. When it's well done, as you do them, I enjoy them.

A post "No Life For You" ship between them though squiks me. There's some really disturbing undertexts there, especially in terms of just how little sense of self-worth Faith would have to have to go with that.

This does NOT detract from your story execution, mind you. I enjoyed your story and writing in it.
Comments from author:
I actually loved your first review. In the wake of the comics, there has been this huge influx of people reading and writing Faith/Giles and not a lot of discussion about WHY they would work. Reviews that make you think are good - very good.

And I totally agree that there are some problems there with Faith being the person who gets all the crap work that no one else will do. I think I tend to shortcut and assume that the Giles I'm writing has been at least trying to help Faith become one with being a little morally gray. He's certainly not a pure good guy - which has always been one of my favorite things about the series.

Anyway - thanks for the excellent food for thought! ~Vesica

"At this point, writing Faith/Giles is like slipping into an old pair of jeans - a little shabby and worn, but in all the right places, and they just feel like home. Hopefully this doesn't feel like old territory."

Not at all, I am so pleased to see you writing again and being freshly inspired by season 8 canon.

It was a Faith/Giles story as well written as always (because her muscles all felt like wet noodles - what a great descriptive line) and I loved the 3 missed calls on the phone which is a total S8 detail.

I mostly find the pairing of Faith and Giles/May and November squicky - he was a prick to Faith always in comparison to how he treated Buffy (which hasn't changed that much in S8) but you alone can make me truly believe in this pairing with your fine writing.
Comments from author:
Well....I argue that BUFFY was his job. Faith was never his Slayer - and that carries a whole basket load of connotations. He never formally had the sort of obligations to Faith he had to Buffy...but I think moments in the series showed how profoundly he felt he had failed Faith - that he should have been more, done more.

And any review from you always makes me grin!

I've only read Faith's arc of Season 8 - overall, the comics are so disappointing. The art is sort of eh and the story lines are amazing...and surprisingly I was elated and depressed that Faith/Giles is practically canon now. I sort of liked being the crazy freak who shipped where no one else did. :D ~Ves

This was really good. And after everything they've been through, faith and Giles totally deserved it.
Next question, will you please finish three months, seventeen days .... I love your Giles and Faith. They are just evil in that delicious way and I can't wait to see everyone's reactions. Including Faith's. PS I love the watcher entries. They rock. Write more please!!!

I am working on it...eep.

I saw your usename and did a big ol' 180 on reading this. I love your stuff and there's been little to nothing for a Faith-Giles reader to enjoy on this site for quite a while. Loved it, FINALLY they DO something with all that lovely tension.

Buffy voicemail? Nice touch.

Danke

A Faith/Giles sexual relationship after Giles blackmailed her into being a Council Assassin in "No Life For You"? That's really disturbing imagery. *raised eyebrow* Ye gods.

I think what we have here are two radically different interpretations of the text. I didn't read their interaction as blackmail AT ALL. She didn't want to, he offered something she did want, but at no time was there any threat if she didn't. Also - I think Faith was pretty down with the plan the longer she spent with Gigi.

But - to each his or her own.
