Review of chapter "In the Beginning" from Gideon
Review:
I'm glad Willow got something out of Halloween this time but you haven't finished the story! Can Willow control herself well enough to lead other nasties to run themselves into convenient walls or will this be an altogether useless 'ability'? Hey if they can teach Willow French too they can use it as a code when patrolling. Most American vampires wouldn't know French, but Buffy and Xander now do :)

Very interesting story, you write good stuff.

However, one of the "rules" of Halloween is that they don't retain anything but memories (and Buffy's usually fad FAST) unless there's an extra factor involved. Willow seems to be violating this rule.
Comments from author:
Thanks for the review, and sorry, never heard about the "rules". Anyway, there are too many stories out there where Xander retains more than just memories. I'm following in that glorious tradition, but with Willow retaining stuff instead of Xander. Thanks again for the review and the good word.

Only reason I didn't give it a 10 is that you kinda overdid the traps that Xander set. Memory serves Cpt. Miller's traps were mostly standard Army troubleshoots for soldiers. Things like the sticky bombs I remember him mentioning it from their field manuel. Nit picky I know. Overall an interesting take on the evening. Not sure about the whole Ripperish attitude becoming prevalent. As he was unexposed to the Chaos magic by a costume the only reason for reverting is that he felt like it and that seems like a bit of a reach. Not completely OOC, but borderline in my opinion. Hope you get around to adding to it.

Would like to see if you have some more inventive alternatives to what happened in Season 2 and if the small changes have any big impacts on how it plays out. Already removing Spike will make a difference, but with Cpt. Miller and not just some grunt, will that play differently. Also if memory serves he was an English teacher. How much will this part of Miller affect Xander. Too easy just to impart the knowhow, but the better would be the other aspects being explored. Same for Buffy as she also had a different person, not just a vauge change. Willow will be interesting if only what her ability allows if not her likely abuse of it. Will she be able to better deal with the metaphysical considering her ability to phase or is it more of a Kitty Pryde thing? Will it allow her to catch Xander and Cordy earlier? What if the love spell still occurs (not sure considering Miller's impact on Xander likely at least imparting some maturity), then how would Xander duck her if he can't escape her? Lots of little things that are open and would be interesting to explore.

Again hope there is more coming. Appreciate it. Later.

Thank you for your thourough review; I appreciate it greatly. In actuality, I was thinking that the change in Willow might be the greatest of all, because I've given her something other than magic to focus on. What would Willow be and how would her personality be different from cannon if she wasn't miss uberwitch. As to Xander; his new maturity will be taken into account as the story progresses. The same is true with Buffy. Finally, I realize that Giles wasn't a recipient of Ethan's spell, but for him the night did contain an epiphany. He could be both Giles and Ripper. By walling off that part of his personality he was not being true to himself. So as the story progresses you will see Giles incorporate more and more aspects of Ripper into his public life until they effectively merge. I know I'm making this sound like he's got multiple personalities or something, but that was almost the way it was presented in the show.

Again, thank you for taking the time to both read and review my story.

Nice job having Buffy, Giles and Ethan in the same room during the aftermath. I like Xander's intimidation and weapon-making skills.

Wait, so you had a Buffy in costume who could only understand French? Sweet.

Definitely cool having a Willow retain some ghostliness.

Wow. I think my favorite part of your aftermath, though, is Giles in Spike's coat... especially because he's already given Buffy some explanation for the attitude shift ;)

... Need to work on your paragraphing skills though; too many large blocks of text that could be broken up with very little work ;)

Actually the best thing about writing these stories is that within reason you get to change the characters fates, actions, and Karma! Heck my least favorite character is Tara, and in one of my two tales here (I plan I writing more, and longer ones) I made her one of the new PTB, her being the force for good!
Comments from author:
Quite true, however I don't want to have some lame plot device simply create a new Willow, I really want to explore how taking magic out of the mix would have effected her character and that will be a challenge for me as a writer. I hope to get this one right. Thanks for taking the time to read and review.

should've added "Nobody will recognize the crossovers" because I didn't. heh
Comments from author:
Well I would have if they had a "Saving Private Ryan" category under the movies. Xander is the Tom Hanks character in that film. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read and review my story.

A good start. Often the smallest changes makes the most interesting stories. I just hopes that Buffy also kept something that matters.
Comments from author:
Unfortunately Lady Useless (or she who yells in french) didn't have much other than the language thing, but every change matters. Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Not bad. I think you need to add a Disclaimer regarding the ownership of "Saving Private Ryan" to your story.
Comments from author:
If anyone actually thinks that I have any kind of a claim on this or any other movie or TV show then they're crazier than I'm supposed to be. Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Interesting take, I am a fan of halloween stories and Willow by the way but there are too many Xander stories and not enough with the other scoobies and almost none that deal with the consquences of the changes. Look forward to more.

Now that Willow has changed this way you can mold her to be a different person to that which she became on the show.
Comments from author:
Yeah, but the question is how would she change, and would it change her on a fundamental level. My biggest problem with Willow as a character was that as the years went by her character abandoned freind and loved one in order to move closer to Buffy. To me, if you've been a friend with someone for most of your life, you don't abandon them and allow them to take the fall for actions that were just as much yours and theirs (the fluke). So I guess the fundamental question is 'will Willow's character change if she has something other than magic to focus on'? I guess we'll see but right now I'm not sure. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read and review my story and sorry about the sermon.
