Review of chapter "Chapter Four: After the Harvest, Part Deux" from MavenAlysse
Review:
This is excellent. Very logical, well thought out, and I would love to see you continue this. I enjoy BtVS, but it always seemed to me that the characters were more .... charicatures of what they could be. Kinda ... campy. You've made them real. I appreciate that. I do hope you plan to continue. I'd like to see what Cordelia and Jono's reactions to all of this would be and how that would change the series.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Great job so far! I hope that you decide to continue this story!
Comments from author:
Oh, I will. I have plans for this story through (and beyond) season 7. Unfortunately, I'm suffering from a bit of writer's block at the moment. I've just posted a new story, so hopefully *that* is mostly over.

Review:
Ah for a show where the characters grow when experiencing life changing events instead of staying in the same mold.

Love the fic and can't wait to see what else you have planned for this.
Comments from author:
I have vague plans for this fic through season seven and beyond, so I'm enjoying it too. The only real problem I have is that I want to get to some of those plans, but I can't really put them into place until I've done stuff that has to be done first.

For example, the first part of season two is going to take a radical departure from canon, but it's because of something that happens during the summer between season one and two, which means I have to finish writing that first. And I've still got to get there first.

Right now, the big thing I'm debating with myself is how to handle episodes that don't see many - if any - changes. Do I just skip over them and refer to them after a 'time skip'? Or do I write them and use them for foreshadowing of what's to come. (I already have done some of the latter in this chapter - the references to Doctor Gregory are from _Teacher's Pet_, for example.)

Review:
I am loving this so far and look forward to seeing where you take it. I am hoping that you have Xander gently break the news to Willow that he only wants her as a sister. Many authors, some I really like, often have him break the news harshly.

Thanks
Calia
Comments from author:
Xander's clueless when it comes to Willow, unfortunately. He doesn't see her as anything but a sister, at least at this point in the storyline, yeah, but the real problem is that he doesn't know she feels any different about him. Someone has to come out and *tell* him, but most people don't like being that direct, and Willow is, of course, too shy to do anything about it.

But yeah, if I can come up with a way to do this - and chances are that that won't happen this season - I think he'd break the news gently to Willow. I mean, no matter what else happens, she's his best friend. Always has been, always will be. And he won't want to sacrifice that... unless she's putting herself (and others) in danger.

Review:
Good job in keeping things reasonable and Xander not getting unrealistic expectations.
And as for his "need to start growing up" comment, well, that's what people their age try to do.
It's not unusual for that to happen at that age, and he has more reason than most.
Comments from author:
That was actually the line in that chapter that I was the most concerned about writing. I went back and forth on it at least three times before I decided to just leave it in. Not so much because Xander needs to do it, but because he admits it, not only to himself, but to others.

I don't want him to grow up too much. Even if he becomes a leader (as is the goal of this challenge), I still want him to be a goofball. That's, after all, one of the things I liked the most about him.

Review:
A great chapter, with some well done insight into Xander.
Comments from author:
Thanks! I like to think I can understand Xander as a character. Or, at least, I identify with him somewhat. But then, that was the goal of the character, which only goes to show that Joss knew what he was doing.

Review:
This is a great, and in my opinion, better start to season one. I always liked the Xander character in the series. He didn't have powers and he wasn't the best fighter. But, he always cared for his friends and did everything he could to help. Whether it was a hug, encouraging words, a joke to lighten fear, or just a body to slow the bad guy down so Buffy could get the job done. I always hated the way they all considered him as basically useless and labled him the Zeppo. In this story Xander decides to become proactive. He asks to be trained. He informs Giles and Buffy that if they don't help him, he will continue on his own. He made the decision, and acted on it, to destroy the demon that used to be Jesse. These things changed Xander. He is, as he told Giles and Buffy, making changes to himself. This new Xander is going to put a whole new twist on the series that I am definitely looking forward to.
Comments from author:
This Xander won't have any powers either.

Actually, belay that. He won't have any powers other than what he normally does during the series (i.e. during possessions) until at least season 5. And, even then, it's not likely to be anything but, say, retaining some part of his possession-born sense of smell/scent, as exhibited during The Pack. Anything else Xander gets is gonna be fought and paid for, things which anyone can do.

I agree completely with what you're saying. They say that Xander was supposed to represent the importance of the "everyman" character. That's cool by me. What's *not* cool, in my honest opinion, is how they crapped on that idea over and over again. The parts I found most offensive where the last half of season 3, after the fluke, where everyone dissociates with them and, more importantly, NOT with Willow. I don't blame Willow: she had to do it in order to get Oz back. But the group doesn't even really LIKE Cordelia that much. Why, when the choice came down to it, did they shun Xander? There just seemed to be no reason for it.

The second most offensive part was most of season 4. I mean, hell, towards the end of the season, they even *admitted* it in that whole 'we love you' bit at the bottom of the elevator shaft, but most of the season just felt like 'more of the same' from the end of season 3, despite how Xander was "key guy" in destroying the Mayor. (Which he'll still be, by the way. I have plans for that: Xander will still be going as a soldier on Halloween, but not just a generic soldier.)
