This is amazing. And heartbreaking. And beautiful. the detached way with which you wrote it somehow emphasizes the pain Buffy is going through.
I especially love how Jack was the one who comforted her at the end, and the way you put in the beginning of the anecdote.

This story kinda came from nowhere, and the more I wrote, the more I wanted to bring Jack in. I actually had the ending written well before I'd written the rest of the story and I was so happy when it fit in with the rest. LOL.

You might want to fix this particular typo, though: "Yet the details had been itched into her memory" (instead of 'itched', that should be 'etched into her memory').

One of the hardest things about losing a loved is the burden of shoulda, coulda, woulda. That really comes through in this story without making Buffy to much of a bad guy. The ending was a really nice touch.
