An interesting story, with some freaking craZy "normal" people.
If *I* were there, those arbitrary rules would get me annoyed very quickly. I'd then probably knock down a few letters deliberately. Only a few of course: RSTLNM AEIOU.....Let's see them deal with THAT! ;)
One "real world" objection: If this island is part of the USA, reading people's mail like that is a Federal crime! If they'd sent me the Giles letter, I'd send a two word reply: Zuck Qff!

Nollop's history is that it was settled by US expatriates, but that it is an independent country, albeit one with close ties to the US. Their laws obviously permit the opening of mail.

Quirky, no folk tales spring to mind where the safety of the populace is dependant on the spelling of a phrase comes to mind but it sort of reminds me of the Europe English joke
