Review of chapter "Parting Ways" from Elgin
Review:
If I enjoyed ‘A Charmed Regeneration’, then I just LOVED ‘Webs and Witches’! :) This is a 100% fully original fanfic, not adapted from existing material in any way, shape or form, and works like a charm (no pun intended) – top notch stuff.

I’d have to break the conventional rules and give ‘Webs and Witches’ a 20 out of 10 rating – this is supernova material and then some. It’s clear you put quite a lot of effort in coming up with the plot for W&W, and it’s paid off huge dividends.

I think Peter may have been slightly out-of-character – he seemed more cheerful and less depressed than I remember him being in the films. I feel it’s a huge improvement, given that his near-constant moping and angsting in the films is a large part of what put me off seeing them more than once each.

The team-up between Beelzebub’s coven and Mysterio is very well handled, and provides an excellent gradual escalation of challenges for the Charmed Ones and Spidey. Too, I feel it provides a decent balance between the technological and the magical aspects of those challenges – I’m no expert on Spider-Man, but I’m reasonably sure that Mysterio was the most gadget-oriented of the wall-crawler’s regular enemies, so he makes an excellent counter to the magic that the coven, Beelzebub and the Charmed Ones brought to the party.

The Paige-Peter ‘ship was probably one of the best ‘ships I’ve seen in a fanfic. (No, I’m not exaggerating in the slightest.) It was sweet, they made a cute couple, Paige did a good job of convincing Peter that he wasn’t responsible for Norman’s death, they fought well alongside each other, they had very little (if any) cause to bicker or squabble, they had a very healthy relationship... they didn’t fall into the pitfalls of becoming sickeningly sweet and ridiculously cutesy... In short, their relationship was utterly flawless, magnificently presented, and just. Plain. Worked. This is a solid platinum ‘ship you’ve created, both in terms of content and your methods of presentation. This is the ultimate standard of how to handle a ‘ship! :)

Seeing Phoebe teaming up with Spider-Man in Chapter 10 to check possible sites of magical activity was a twist that I never saw coming in a million years, and they made a very good team together. If you write a sequel, please try and build on this a little; it was a great way for Peter to bond with one of Paige’s sisters, and to gradually become ‘one of the family’ after a fashion.

The fight scenes were beautifully choreographed, and really benefited from not getting ‘overcrowded’ with too many major characters or groups of minor characters battling in the same place at the same time.^ Each of the Charmed Ones, Spidey, Mysterio, the Coven members and Beelzebub himself all managed to get a chance to show off their abilities ‘on top form’ so to speak, with no character’s abilities or skill getting dialled down in order to make another character seem more impressive.

(^This is something I deeply wish a lot more fanfic writers would bear in mind... and more ‘commercial’ writers too, for that matter.)

If ‘A Charmed Regeneration’ set the bar for the ‘tweaked canon’ fanfics, then ‘Webs and Witches’ sets the bar for all fanfics, period. It beats all hollow a lot of ‘commercial’ fiction out there, too: you may not be in the same league as Tolkein as a writer, (but who is? ;)) but you do extremely well for yourself, and if you can write something like ‘Webs and Witches’ then you’ve got to be somewhere in the top 15%, possibly the top 10%. (No, this is not flattery. I don’t do flattery; I do solid facts. A couple of friends of mine have compared me to Rodney McKay in terms of personality, with the main difference being that I don’t criticise people if I feel they’ve screwed up; instead, I just say nothing whatsoever unless they press me for details.)

Sequels: I would most certainly like to see a sequel (or fifty) to ‘Webs and Witches’ one day. In all honesty, out of all the fanfic writing projects you’ve got in the works and all the possible sequels you could write for your completed fanfics, ‘Webs and Witches 2’ is what I’d most like to see. (Please don’t get me wrong, the fanfics that are your current works-in-progress are great stuff, it’s simply a case that ‘Webs and Witches 2’ is what holds the most appeal to me.)

Congratulations on writing this fantastic gem of fiction, and thanks for sharing it with us! :)

Best wishes,

El :)

Edited to add: Well, I'd be happy to beta read any sequels to this delight of a fic. As mentioned in my review of 'A Charmed Regeneration', I'm not very knowledgeable about the 'Charmed' canon, and I'm a long way from an expert on Marvel, but I can probably help with the 'nuts and bolts' side of things and fight scenes.

Thanks again,

El ;)
Comments from author:
Peter-wise, I figured that at this point between the films he'd be in a fairly comfortable place with himself; he's moved past the worst of the Mary-Jane-related angst, he's making a good impact on the city he's sworn to protect, and generally he's finding a balance in his life (Things just got a bit trickier later on).

Still, glad you liked the character interaction between Peter and the Charmed Ones, and I'm grateful to hear that the fight scene met with your approval; I feel that my strengths lie more in exploring character development than physical scenes, so it's always good to hear that I did a story where both of them come together well.

I'll keep a sequel in mind when I manage to get through a few of my current projects; I've already got a couple of candidates for the villain in mind, I assure you.

Totally enjoyed the story. A sequel would be of the good, unfortunately I don't have any suggestions; so if you ever come up with a new plot, keep this xover in mind.
Comments from author:
Well, I have a potential villain in mind; I'm just a bit busy with other projects at the moment, but I may get around to writing it later.

Interesting story so far, I'm enjoying it.

"for our goal to be successful" - goal to be achieved / plan to be successful, ed.

Also, if the leader just informed them of the arrival of the Charmed Ones, how did one of the others know it was Paige getting a date?
Comments from author:
He could have been the one who identified the Charmed Ones as being in the city in the first place; just because the leader says he's developed a means to detect their magic after he killed Jeremy doesn't mean that it alerted him to their presence (It could have just allowed him to confirm that they were there rather than make him aware of when they were there)

You have done a great job with this story and I hope you will get inspired to write a sequel to this story.

Amazing =D
I liked the way Paige and Peter separated, even though I love them together, it was sweet and mutual and totally understandable with none of the melodrama!
I think this was an entirely amazing story the whole way through, I can't believe you have so few reviews for it!!
It's nice to see such a unique cross, that actually works as well! Well written and generally fabulous!

'gas grenade?” she asked, staring at Harry in surprise'
I think 'Harry' needs to be changed to 'Peter' there!!
I love this cross, it's unique, and just generally amazing!! I didn't think Phoebe could fly though, just levitate a few feet off the ground, but she has always needed some better powers, so maybe it's a good upgrade =)
I also love the Peter/Paige pairing, it really works and to be honest I've never really liked her pairings in the actual show, they don't stand out as good characters like Leo and Cole

it is appreciated. never doubt that I love the comics and the movie (which is this going off of?) I see its in the comic section but you never know. great pairing and good choice the charmed ones Piper could give Peter lessons on waining about having a normal life. were was I?... oh sorry got lost. LOVE IT more soon please
Comments from author:
It's the movie version between "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2", just to let you know; I figured it would be easier that way and make the Charmed Ones' involvement more appropriate, as the comic version has experience in dealing with issues such as magic- albeit with assistance from Doctor Strange and similar heroes-, whereas the movie version's only real challenge to date- at this point in continuity- has been the Green Goblin, thus leaving him more out of his depth than the comic version would be.
