Great imagery (comparing joining Starfleet to driving over the edge of that quarry, etc.) as well as a fine job of working in TOS elements of Kirk's back-story (his brother Sam from "Operation: Annihilate" and a brief mention in "What Are Little Girls Made of?", and that traumatic episode with Kodos the Executioner from "Conscience of the King") into the movie's alternate reality back-story.
Also, that was a keen insight about 'do better' (rather than as well as or don't disgrace the memory of) being the challenge that finally gets under Kirk's skin and leads him to turn all that energy in Starfleet's direction.
