As Daniel Radcliffe (the actor who plays Harry) also starred in *Equus*, I can't say as I am utterly shocked by this.

The Durseleys likely sent him out the first time to get him killed, and afterward because it meant any "freakishness" would be among a bunch of horses as opposed to any of the neighbors.
