nice meeting between the two and poor Merlin will have an interesting morning.

Glad you liked it. I wasn't too sure about my portrayal of Hunith as opposed to the show's, I just wanted her to be a strong enough character to stand up to Uther. And yes, poor Merlin in the morning... and poor Arthur. I can't just torment one after all... it wouldn't be fair :)
Oh, my . . . ! Somehow, I think Hunith's right about Merlin's gift being even harder to hide, if he's supposed to deal with Uther as a son, rather than a somewhat anonymous servant.

Yup, but where's the fun if it's easy right :)

Very interesting beginning. I recently got caught by the Merlin fandom myself only to be incredibly disappointed by the lack of any good quality full length fics (found a few one-shots though) so this was a pleasant find. If you're interested the one fic I did find worth reading was "A Lion and a Unicorn" by Mnemosyne77 on FF.net and if you haven't already, I recommend you check it out.
The one thing I will say about the fics direction is, that the end of this chapter seems to hint towards Hunith not telling Merlin anything until Uther does which seems a bit off. It would be more believable for her to take Merlin aside the next time she sees him and tell him before Uther can so he's braced for it. Of course that's just my opinion.
Also in Chapter 1 you have this line. “She’s here for her son, Merlin’s, twentieth birthday. He’s turning twenty in a few days,”
It seems a bit un-necessary to say it's his twentieth birthday and then going on to say again he turns twenty in a few days. Maybe remove the 'twentieth'. Apart from that it's all good.
Looking forward to reading more.

I find it hard to find those as well, or, at least ones that aren't slash. I'm not a big fan of it myself, though I don't begrudge people who are. I just prefer fics that keep characters' sexual preferences canon (whatever that may be), or at least change it in a more or less convincing or realistic manner, which the vast majority I've tried reading don't. Just my opinion but I'm getting off topic.
I have read 'A Lion and a Unicorn' and it is one of my favourite Merlin stories to date. Mnemosyne77's (who went by Morgana21 when first writing 'ALaaU') other three fics are well worth the read too. 'Embers' by brickroad13 is also very good, as is RixxiSpook's humour short 'Merlin's Hair'. IDunnoWho has a few funny ones as well.
As far as my fic goes you're right about the double year thing. The funny part of it is that I hastily added 'twentieth' before birthday without really reading a day or two after the chapter was already up. I could have sworn that I had forgotten to put the 'turning twenty in a few days' thing in and then Uther's thoughts wouldn't have made any sense.
I can also see what you mean with Hunith, but that's not the route I plan on taking. I'm thinking of using good old fashioned angst and guilt over *not* telling him herself, though that doesn't mean she won't try to soften the blow.
Glad you're enjoying it so far and thanks for the review.

Looking forward to the big reveal. With 2 parents who don't use magic how was he born with it? If Uther learned of Merlin's gifts what would he do now he knows merlin's his son? How will Merlin and Arthur take the news?

Glad you enjoyed it so far. I asked my magic eight ball and it said 'better not tell you now', so I guess you'll have to wait for the magic reveal for the answer :)

Uther thinks Merlin may be his son? Is he? Why did she call him by a different name? Did he use a fals one when they met?

Wow, you nailed everything with a few short sentences :) Thanks for the review and I hope you like the rest of the story. I was actually working on chapter 2 when this review popped up in my email.
