I think you've established that Thomas needs to do the opposite of whatever implulse he happens to have at the moment. Going off to explore, alone, after 1) carelessly breaking open the 'mysterious' magic'ed box, and 2) getting them stranded in a different world/dimension with out leaving at least a copy of the note so Willow had some idea of where to search, is making me think he was dropped on his head VERY often as a baby.
