Review of chapter "Chapter 9" from burmafrdnow
Some of that command training will be of the good; but sadly I have seen the course outlines of a lot of command courses and to be blunt a lot of it is BS.

In this day and age sadly PC is the law of the land and CYA is the gospel.

Now one can hope that RMN has done better but combat command in the end comes down the the individual ability of the commander.

The very best are always born not made. I think with careful work you can by rote be a decent to good commander about a lot of things.

BUT in the heat of battle the instincts and personal quirks will come to the front.

That is why Lee was so good; and McClellan so bad.

It was why deep in the battle at Shiloh Grant made the absolute correct decisions on the fly.

While at the battle of Chancelorsville Hooker could not figure it out even before he was stunned by the near miss

Why Patton could clearly see what the Battle of the Bulge was all about; and why he was so distraught when forced to stop in his drive across France.

Why Rommel was so often able to win against greater odds in the desert.

The ability to think clearly and logically and make the correct decision in the middle of fighting for your life is something you are born with and cannot be learned.

Now adhering to some good rules like Recon if you will not warn the enemy you know where he is; having a reserve if possible; things like that are very good to learn.

Review of chapter "Chapter 2" from burmafrdnow
One quibble I would have about the part where the Scoobies are shocked at Queen Elizabeth being black. From everything I have seen Manticore is still mostly white or close so a black queen would be surprising no matter what. Clearly there are mixed races but black is still a distinct minority. So a black queen in a mostly white or so society would be strange and shocking.

I would say that Honor being startled by their reaction just shows that she is not as well read up on ancient earth as she thinks she is.

One real big continuity problem that I have noticed in David Webers series is that the knowledge of Earth pre diaspora varies from book to book.

In one they have details from battles in WW2. In another they seem to lack knowledge of what a motion picture is.
Not having a clue what Soldier Field was in Chicago in another. Yet knowing supposedly in detail or at least a fair amount of detail about how far Civil Rights had gotten in that time period in another.

So actually this does ring true to the series in Honor having incomplete knowledge and less then she thought she had.

Um, so are you saying that I got it wrong or right by their reactions?

Well done.
Only an 8 due to the unfinished status.
All of the Buffy-verse characters are slightly more grown up than the show had them THANK-YOU for that.
The Honor-verse characters are as they should be again THANK-YOU.
You have a talent for meshing two completely different sets of ideas and maturing them quite nicely.

That bit with Andrew was really good. I like stories that actually have him do more than being a cook, etc.

You know, when you think about it, his video game experience might be useful.

One thing I have noticed over the years of reading Steven Webers Harrington series is a strange kind of inconsistency. In one book they will mention they have no idea what a motion picture is; then in another there will be mentions of a specific movie.

They say lots of records are lost; then in one book Honor tells a young cadet to look up a specific battle in World War 2.

On old earth no one knows what Soldier's Field actually was. Things like that.

Going to be fun for the Manties and company trying to figure out a simulation for vampires and chaos demons and so on.

Now as regards Recon and other types of military procedures that is a good idea. BUT frankly I doubt it will do as much good as some there think it will.

the chaos that revolves around the supernatural does not work too well when you try and put it in a neat little box

The Initiative tried the same thing- that worked so well didn't it?

this is the only Honor Harrington fic that is being updated at all - the only other one frankly was just an excuse to do bed hopping.

There was one called Honor's Slayer but that one seems dead as well

RECON is almost always a good thing- BUT sometimes all you do is warn the enemy you know where he is. Not always 100% a good thing. Automatic reactions are good for most situations as well- but it is something to note that the Initiative tried to do all that and did not do all that well. Training is not a panacea for all situations. There are some that defy simulation. But I do agree that the Scoobies need some standardized training to deal with most things they will run into. My personal thought that as regards the Manties the point needs to be made that you cannot fall into the trap that the book has all the answers. That direction leads you to situations like Kendra's.
Comments from author:
I miss Honor's Slayer as well, the author at least left it off at a finish point, but it could have gone so many other places.

I'll do my best with updates.

The purpose of training is to get people to use behaviors so automatically that it is reflex, with Willow in the mix simulations might be a bit more realistic than the Manties expect.

Recon is always a good idea.

Given that all their possessions are actual 20th century things they should have collectors willing to pay big bucks for stuff.
Comments from author:
Until someone checked them for age and found that they were considerably younger than 20th Century Earth.

Good thought though.

Thanks for the review.

I don't know if it's subconscious or not... but Andrew and the Star Wars references... well, I'm wondering how deeply he is going to start thinking on that...

After-all, he's in what to him is a sci-fi universe with spaceships and 'snub-fighters' (LACS). There are Queens and Princesses and Duchesses and evil empires...

And he's now a founding member of the local equivalent of the Jedi... ;)
Comments from author:
You know, I've never really looked at it that way, thanks for giving me something to think about.

Welcome back. I've greatly enjoyed reading your work. I hope to equally enjoy any effort you might make to complete any of your unfinished stories. I'm tracking all of them (even "Nightmare Revisited," just in case).

Thank you for adding to "Scattered Wounds." As I am a Weber fan it was, if not my most favorite of your stories, at least tied with only one or two others for the top spot. I hated to see it lie incomplete for so long.
Comments from author:
Sorry, around the first of the year I got stuck in a job with 12 hour days, it wasn't everyday, but on days off I didn't really feel like doing much of anything. I've thankfully gotten a new job, and now that I have settled in hopefully I'll be able to increase my writing a bit.

Thanks for the review.

“She’s the Queen,” Michele replied deadpan.

That's a perfect response.

I can see Andrew enjoying the view after seeing all those movies.

Hope Giles and his slayers/bodyguards are taking the time to ask Honor questions about Grayson.

Great story looking forward to your next chapter.
Comments from author:
Thanks. You can take as a given that Giles is doing research.
