Review of chapter "Tell Me What" from Neverwillmini
Overall, I like the story line but I find it hard to believe that Giles wouldn't take those 10 or so years. Yes he's older, but he is also a skilled fighter (he did train Buffy for several years), so he would have at least some chance. Also, he tends to spend a lot of time in libraries and offices (if he's running the Council now). I would think the Council grounds were all blessed as Holy Ground just to keep off most demons.

Valid points. Very valid points.
Now, here's what I'm thinking.
If you subscribe to the school of thought that Giles was born in 1955, and work out the dates from the two stories in the series so far (which, incidentally, mean that this one is playing out in 2010) then he's 55. But, in those 55 years he has had one hell of a life. He's saved the world, and caused havoc in it. Tired, understandably, and he's read Ethan's chronicle, and knows how close the Immortal is to the edge of madness.
Ethan has trouble caring, and even more trouble letting go afterwards. It'd make things extremely complected if Ethan was in love with two people at the same time... Mmm, interesting idea, though....
Anyway, basically, he's standing aside firstly so a- Ethan doesn't have time to fall for him again, which would mean that his eventual permanent death would probably drive him to madness totally, (which would incidentally upset Xander, too) and b- so that Xander has a clean chance.
Or at least that's the way I'm trying to work things.
