Review of chapter "XIX" from starwolf
Review:
overall I enjoyed your story. the only part that really bugs me was Weston, he Grates on my nerves every time he opens his mouth (but you wrote him as annoying as the show did), plus his moral code is nearly as flexible as Dexters. very well done. thanks
Comments from author:
Thanks - Weston was mostly in the story to add complications and nuisance - ditto Caine. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for writing, and extra thanks for finishing! I confess that by the time I could see where Gibbs was setting Dexter up, I was actually rooting for Dexter to spot the set-up and get away with his earlier crimes.
Comments from author:
The trouble with Dexter is that they really had to set the Miami police up as near-incompetents to let Dexter get away with it. Once you bring in outsiders who are looking at the police department and eventually specifically at Dexter he really doesn't stand much of a chance. The quote at the end of the story pretty much sums it up - most serial killers get caught, because they're incompetent, over-confident, insane, and/or all of the above. Dexter thought he needed to kill someone by the end of the story - he took stupid risks and fell for an obvious trap because of that.

More satisfying than the way the series ended, oddly enough (I recently OD'd on the "Dexter" DVD sets from the library, and to say I was disappointed by the turn things took at the end of the final season is a major understatement).
Comments from author:
Yes, the series end was a real downer. Glad you enjoyed my version!

That was excellent Marcus and I am glad you finished it. Dose that mean you will finish the Modesty story now:-
Comments from author:
It's on my list - I haven't given up on any of my unfinished stories, just VERY slow to do much about them.

Only disappointment is not seeing Deb or Rita's reaction to SPOILERS DELETED. Very good story.
Comments from author:
I did think about a "what happened to everyone else" epilogue, but a lot of it is fairly predictable, and it's taken me so long to write this that I didn't want to keep people waiting any longer.

Had me going with the dream sequence.

Good, I was hoping it'd fool a few people.

Review:
The whole dream sequence was a nasty trick, making us think it was over like that. I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that Dexter is being played rather easily. I would have thought that his paranoia would have him playing it safe for the moment, but maybe his obsession is getting the better of him.

Surprisingly, I can't help but root for Dexter to somehow, someway twist his way out of this mess.
Comments from author:
He's really being very careful - but he's let his emotions blind him to the possibility of a trap.

Very good story. I've been following it for a while.

Although I do wonder what happens if they manage to catch and convict Dexter. Is sending Dexter to a maximum security prison really such a good idea?

(I just always picture a final scene where someone mentions to Gibbs that the overcrowded prison Dexter was sent to is slowly becoming less crowded...)
Comments from author:
Well, to quote Rorschach - "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me"

Deb at NCIS:LA? That could work.

But I can't help that I'm still rooting for Dexter to somehow get away clean, in spite of the top-notch efforts of Gibbs and Michael Westen, et al. :)
Comments from author:
We'll see what happens... hopefully in the next part.

And the noose tightens!

I'm so torn -- I WANT to root for Gibbs and his team, but I also want Dexter to have a happy ending (no matter how unrealistic and impossible that seems)! :)
Comments from author:
Let me put it this way - the end will be better than the end of the real series (and already is since Rita is still alive!)

Review:
I've enjoyed this so far, but I also have a few pretty big problems with it.

First, I don't think Lila's body would have been found. Even without the boat, Dexter could have found a way to get rid of a body. If he dumped it in a river, like you said, he would have weighed it down with rocks. And no, the release of gas wouldn't have been enough to make it buoyant, especially if the thing he zipped her up in wasn't air tight.

More importantly, though, NO ONE is questioning his guilt, despite the very circumstantial evidence. His friends all think he's guilty, his wife thinks he guilty, even his sister thinks he's guilty. Hell, she took off without even getting his side of it. That's super out of character for her. You could maybe make an argument that she couldn't face it after the Rudy thing, but she's stronger than that. Besides which, Dexter can basically do no evil in Debra's eyes at this point in the time line. She would need much stronger evidence than this to even entertain the idea that he might be guilty.

But despite these issues, I still enjoy the story. So, what happens next?
Comments from author:
Re Paris - while you may be right, his normal disposal methods use a boat way out at sea, I'm not sure how well they'd adapt to a river in the middle of a city.

Re the distrust - Remember that this has happened over several days and that Deb was shown a lot of evidence - not just about Paris - which I didn't want to put in the story since it would have been repetitive. Rita is simply scared for her children; she's had an abusive relationship, and if she suddenly starts to see Dexter as dangerous she'll take whatever steps are needed to protect them from him and from any fallout that might accompany his arrest.

Re what happens next... hopefully I finish the story!

Just when I thought it was over, you pulled me back in again. The twist, the counter-twist, and the sheer sneakiness of it all is what gave this chapter it's exceptional rating. Yeah, I can believe that Gibbs is that sneaky and that ruthless to bring in Trent Kort to assist. I love this story!
Comments from author:
You think that's ruthless? Well, the next chapter will hopefully show just how ruthless Gibbs can be when he puts his mind to it.
