Review of chapter "Chapter One" from IronOx
Review:
This was a real pleasure to find. The Judge Dee series has always been a favorite, and you really caught the style and setting. I am sorry you haven't had a chance to continue it.
Comments from author:
Thank you very much! I got about half-way through the next chapter and then became caught up in 'Lord of the Rings' stuff. The trouble is that I beta for my wife, Curiouslywombat, and she is very prolific. The result is that I'm immersed in LotR almost all the time and it ends up being much easier to write my own LotR fics than to write in other 'verses. This one is, however, one I'm very much looking forward to continuing as soon as the Wombat slackens off her pace.

Review:
Just realised I never reviewed this - I'd really love to see more if you ever have time to continue it. I read all of the Judge Dee books when I was 15-ish, I really must get around to reading them again.
Comments from author:
Thank you! It's stalled at the moment because I hit a snag with the integration of the Buffyverse side with the Judge Dee side. Also I'm being somewhat crushed by work-load at the moment and have very little energy for writing except in those fandoms that I know by heart and don't need to research. I'll return to it once I've finished 'The Dark Companion' and 'The Witch's Promise'.

Review:
I didn't realize anyone still read the Judge Dee novels, even if the Mystery of the Phantom Flame sort of publicized Judge Dee. It's so rare I decided to actually post a review.

I find Robert van Gulik's work impressive and even more impressive that you manage to capture his style of writing while crossing it over with BTVS. It really feels like one of his novels, except for the supernatural element, and even that could be rationalized out as simply a member of a secret order of martial artists.

I highly doubt supernatural creatures would have or need the medical knowledge to take out a slayer.
Comments from author:
Thank you!

The supernatural element is always left ambiguous in the novels, for instance the murdered magistrate's ghost in 'The Chinese Gold Murders' which turns out to have been the magistrate's brother - except for one instance when it wasn't - or the were-tiger in the same book which may, or may not, have been a combination of a normal tiger and a disturbed man who merely thinks he is a were-tiger.

The murders were, of course, committed by a normal human. The motive, however, might be supernatural...

I really must get back to this but at the moment I'm concentrating on the 'Tabula Avatar' series.

Review:
Hello! Hello?
Comments from author:
Sorry, I have decided to concentrate on 'The Witch's Promise' until it's finished. I have a Conan mod for Neverwinter Nights 2 installed, to help with background, and while it's there normal NWN2 games keep crashing whenever a cleric of a non-Hyborean deity goes up a level. That makes writing 'A Plague of Serpents' more difficult (Chantry goes up a level almost every chapter) and so I want to be able to uninstall the Conan mod ASAP. Unfortunately Real Life (TM) has interfered with my writing a lot lately and I don't think I'm going to make my original target of getting TWP finished by the end of June.

Once TWP is finished I'll return to this, and to TA and APOS.

Any chance of an update in this month, please? Or maybe next month?
Comments from author:
I have the next chapter half written and it would certainly be useful to me to finish it soon; it would mean I could put aside the references on Boston slang and Tang Dynasty China that are cluttering up my desktop at the moment. However I've decided to concentrate on 'The Witch's Promise' at the moment because I don't know when the cut-off point for the next COA Awards will be (I don't want to miss out by 16 days the way 'Debt of Blood' did last year) and I think it would be a valid contender for the 'Joe Loves Lesbians' mod award. I'm trying to get it finished before the end of June, or July at the latest.

I have three weeks vacation in August, the convention I booked time off for turned out to be right at the beginning of that period, and I'm free the rest of the time. I intend to do a lot of writing then and this story is top of the list.

Any chance of an update in the coming month, please?
Comments from author:
I haven't done any writing at all in the past month; real life issues, including my cat going missing for 5 days and me acting as Supervisor at work while the actual Supervisor is away on a Caribbean cruise, have left me with no energy for writing. However the cat's back, the Supervisor returns on Thursday, and I'll get back to writing shortly. I've been re-reading the entire Judge Dee series and this story will get priority.

Your characterisation of the judge is dead on target. Please continue with this.

Thank you! I'll be continuing with this as soon as I finish the next chapter of 'A Plague of Serpents', which I'm half-way through.

I'll update as soon as I can. I have one more night of my 10-hour night shift to go and then I'm off for 15 days during which time I'll do as much writing as possible.

Review:
As well-written as I've come to expect from you, which means the questions raised will probably be answered in following chapters, but here they are anyway:
Why would they be sent back in time to finish Chinese slayer X's mission? What makes her so special compared to the other dead slayers? Was she killed by time travelers?
Not familiar enough with Judge Dee to comment on that end of things.
Comments from author:
Thank you!

It's not strictly true that Faith and Chao-Ahn were sent back in time to finish Shao Soo-niang's mission; that's all I'll say about that for now.

Beeyootiful! This is better than watching a Jackie Chan confection. Its very cool that the language issue is still in effect for Cho-An plus Faith with the barbarian lineage in her appearance. I have to confess that I'm a fan of mid century English mystery fiction so I'm going to go out and spend too much money on those books. update: Double clicking the submit button again.
