If you have never seen Kolchak: the Night Stalker it's well worth the time and effort to look up.

Your story pacing reminds me a lot of one of his episodes, hence my comment.

You have me wondering what kind of dinosaur the primal spirit is manifesting as. It doesn't seem to be one of the big ones, though it's defiantly a carnivore.
