How the heck does she even move in her dress uniform with all that stuff hanging off the front?

Review of chapter "Updated for Post The Avengers" from SirLee
I'm probably the worst guy in the world to nitpick, not being a citizen of the USA, never having been military, and not having any particular interest in military stuff, but...

But. As it happens, I like to fiddle with formatting in my archival copies of the stories. And I wasn't really enamored with the all-in-one-big-image format here; I wanted more flexibility.

Well, the real-world medals are not that hard -- Wikipedia has good images for most/all of them, after all. Failing that, it shouldn't be too hard to find images.

But the ribbon rack was a different matter. I didn't want to go to all the trouble of assembling them piece by piec on Gimp. I could just have cropped the image, but it was sort of blurry. But it occurred to me that since all ribbons are the same size, it should be relatively easy to create an application to generate one -- meaning that there should be one somewhere on the Web.

Turns out I was right; I found several sites with "rack builders." Quality varies widely -- some ribbons are too small, some have faded colors, some are unable to cope with ribbons from different services. (Just to make a long story short, the least objectionable one I found was on -- but for some reason, it lacks the oak leaves option for the Illinois attendance award. If someone knows of a better one, which can deal with different services, devices, has good quality images etc, I'll appreciate it). Of course, none of them include the Chitauri ribbon ;-D, but I managed to figure out that the Korea Defense Service would do as a placeholder for later replacement in GIMP.

Still, when fiddling with it, attempting to reproduce the racks posted here, I noticed a few inconsistencies between the text and the images:
- Buffy's two GWOT awards disappear between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 (is it normal to leave them out? I really have no idea of the relevant protocol.)
- Buffy was supposed to have her second Good Conduct award on chapter 2, but no clasp is shown;
- Faith's ribbons in Chapter 2 are supposed to include the Army Commendation Award, but the ribbon displayed is for the Army Achievement Award
- My understanding of oak leaves is that they represent additional awards, that is, for "N" awards, there would be "N-1" oak leaves, is that correct? If so, Buffy and Faith have too many oak leaves in Chapter 3. Also, Faith's National Defense medal was shown but not listed, nor was her second Army National Guard Components Achievements.

(I'm unclear on how the NCO Professional Development and Overseas Service numerals work -- Wikipedia seems to suggest that the lowest number is "2" for a second award, consistent with your usage, and, for the NCO PD, the highest is "4", although in the past a "5" was possible, but the online generators allow numbers from "1" to "8")

Oh it's absolutely loaded with errors and I just don't feel like fixing it at the moment.

I can believe most anything, but Buffy getting a medal for good conduct? Does that mean different in American?
Comments from author:
Nope. She can be an excellent soldier.

She does not qualify for the Army Good Conduct Medal (let alone 2 of them) since it requires 3 years active duty as an enlisted member. She spent the vast majority of her 4 years enlisted as an Army Reservist/National Guardsman, which gets her the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal. However, since she was involuntarily mobilized, she does qualify for the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Device. What she was doing may have been classified but not the fact that she was mobilized.

Additionally, anyone who had served at least 30 days on active duty between 11 SEP 01 through MAR 04 qualifies for the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. So she would have had it awarded no later than a month after she was commissioned.

Okay, that takes care of the "we know she did this, she gets that award." Now for the "we know or think we know she did this, so she should probably get that award."

I believe it is safe to say that at least once and probably quite a few times Buffy and other members of T&PF7 were deployed out of the Continental United States to places other than Afghanistan and Iraq to take care of business. I also believe it is reasonable to assume that "Dutch" or his superiors at U. S. Army Special Operations Command or U. S. Special Operations Command would routinely designate those excursions as meeting the requirements for awarding the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. By the time of the events in New York City practically everyone in the unit should have it.

We know that as of 2008 (and possibly earlier) Buffy was a Major and the Executive Officer of a unit commanded by a Major General. We also know that by early 2011 Buffy had been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and had taken command of T&PF7 when "Dutch" retired. Given all that, I think some of those Army Commendation Medals should be Meritorious Service Medals (MSM). After all, in the U.S. Army, recipients of the MSM are typically field grade officers (O-4 to O-6), senior chief warrant officers (W-3 to W-5), and senior non-commissioned officers (E-7 to E-9).

Finally, on to New York. With less than 36 hours notice prior to the Chitauri Invasion, T&PF7 managed to get their heavy mechanized unit from Tacoma, WA to Ft Bragg, NC, mate up with their infantry component and fly to New York City. Arriving only hours after the Chitauri, they dropped on Central Park and Park Avenue and proceeded to rendezvous with Buffy, likely engaging targets of opportunity on the way. Accomplishing that, they began providing heavy fire support to the Avengers, assisting in containing the invaders, and reducing civilian casualties and property damage. On top of all that, their only pre-combat intelligence briefing consisted of being told that something big was going to hit somewhere on the East Coast in the near future. If that doesn't earn Buffy and the rest of T&PF7 at least the Army Valorous Unit Award, if not the Presidential Unit Citation, I don't know what would. I also think that Buffy, and her XO, deserved recognition for forging a battalion sized unit that could accomplish that. At least the Legion of Merit, if not the Distinguished Service Medal for Buffy.
Comments from author:
The GCM and lack of the GWoT medals were two of the errors I mentioned earlier.

I gave her the DSC instead of the DSM and yes PAM has the MUC and the PUC from those actions.

The SHIELD unit patch I get, but you're pissing off a lot of Rangers with the color of that Ranger tab. Its colors have never been anything other than black and gold, and that will never change.

Not trying to jump down your throat here, cuz not a Ranger myself, but I was in 82nd Airborne for a few years, so I knew many Ranger-qualified paratroopers who, while not with the Regiment themselves, had gone to Ranger School at Fort Benning to earn the right to wear that tab on their shoulders, and they would have taken grave offense at seeing a "blue" Ranger tab. Just giving you a fair warning here.

On a more positive and curious note, where did you find the ribbon for the Chitauri campaign? Seems to me that it looks more like the Navy Cross, but I'm just guessing.

How did she get the Afghanistan medal with a Helicopter Assault arrowhead? Was it because she was attached to the 82nd Airborne? Also, how'd you come up with the Chitari Campaign medal?

EDIT: sorry, realized that just as a I wrote it.
Comments from author:
Only HUMInt didn't count because of the location and the levels of secrecy. Nothing else. So two.

EDIT:She was infiltrated by helo into Tajikistan during Grunt Work with the 10th Mountain unit she was attached to.
EDIT2: I Made the Chitauri Campaign Medal from Scratch.

1) One is not "eligible" for the Congressional Medal of Honor - one is *recommended* for it, and Congress votes to award it or not. So Captain America is not "eligible" for multiple CMoHs, except that any serving US Military member is. Most of the upper awards are like that, in fact.

2) For multiple awards of the same medal, the ribbon itself counts as the first award, so receiving a second award of the same medal only gets one bronze leaf cluster. It gets complicated from there, though.
Comments from author:
By eligible I meant that he had satisfied the criteria.

Yes I know about the multiple awards but I did this at two in the morning. It is also inaccurate in at least two other ways...can you find them?

Very good.

It's off topic, but what medals would Cap have been eligible for?
Comments from author:
Wow...Eligible for Multiple MoH. DSC, Distinguished Service Medals, Silver and Bronze Stars. Automatically has the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal. Probably the Legion of Merit. Purple Heart of course. Croix de guerre (France), Croix de guerre (Belgium), Luxembourg War Cross, Order of the Crown (Belgium), War Order of Virtuti Militari (Poland), OBE (UK), The Grand Cross of the Order of Adolphe of Nassau (Luxembourg), Military Order of William (Netherlands)... would all be quite possible due to his work in Europe.

Very nice job. I liked the SHIELD shoulder unit flash with Buffy's 'tower of power' above it.

Edit: Goes without saying, the Slayer is totally cool and deserves everything she wears. I can't remember, did she take out one of those robo-dragon thingies? How about killing hell-gods? She should have accepted the MoH.

What about the Chitauri Campaign Medal?

Review of chapter "Chapter One" from fanreaderonetwo
This brings to mind one of my fantasies.
It is of Col. Samantha Carter of SG-1 getting _all_ the US medals (for combat and wounds on earth and elsewhere. Then there are all the assorted qualification badges she has earned, including those for piloting, navigating and commanding USAF aerospace fighters (the F-302) and US interstellar and intergalactic military spacecraft.
Then there are the _really_ odd ones she could wear, the Purple Heart variant for actually being _killed_ in action (IIRC at least two awards), an award for having blown up a _star_, and all the geegaws awarded by governments on other planets.

I was figuring on one or more DSCs, multiple Silver Stars (w and w/o Vs), an absurd number of Bronze Stars (w and w/o Vs), a ridiculous number of PHs, and so much other fruit salad that it wouldn't fit on her chest. This assumes that the collection _doesn't_ include the CMHs she has arguably earned over the years.

Image of her in dress uniform in front of an international gathering while knowledgeable observers "decode" her medals and their eyes got wider and wider.

If O'Neill and _his_ fruit salad collection was there, the eyes would be even wider.

Well POO!!! That wasn't story. Just a show and tell. I guess there was no other way to show it all though. Bleh. I've been a civilian for so long I just don't care about all that stuff anymore. All I care about is can the person do the job.
