Review of chapter "Over-Egging the Cake" from MBB
Review:
I like your solution of Superman tunneling below (Can't he fly?), but I don't see why you included other crossovers. That may be part of your point I guess, but too many(unnessesary/unmatching) crossovers is one of my dislikes.
Of course extreme exaggeration can make any point, but balancing is a big issue in any fanfic. In fact, even placing S7 Buffy or Willow in season 1 can give serious power balance issues if not done carefully, so I agree it is an important and tricky thing.
A bigger issue i think is that if the writer does not realize the power imbalance, and only halfway realizes that with the easy win the story will be too short, and starts adding more and more power to the bad guys to up the balance, or starts killing off good guys.

But for the occasional fic, a power imbalance doesn't have to matter if it is done right. Like if the point is a joke/insight (like your fic), if it is just a short meeting or the story is a detective to find the bad guys. (Or the rare bashfic to poke fun at a fandom, if properly announced)

Still, if you ever do write that essay, please do not just focus on what goes wrong, but include pointers on how to avoid and/or correct them.
Comments from author:
This is pretty much the point I'm trying to make - there needs to be some sense and balance in crossovers if they're to work.

Sorry if you see two versions of this comment - I initially thought you were commenting on another story and have edited my response.

Seriously I quite agree with your comment at the end. The story however still made me laugh.

On a serious note (yes I am capable of those!) the reason I don't like super heroes or gods is that they belittle humanity. Why bother doing anything if Superman or god comes and does it for you?

D.
Comments from author:
They can be fun though, especially if you explore their more vulnerable aspects.

ROFLMFAO... Epic. Point very well-made.

My biggest beef with Fanfics are their frequent utter lack of grammar and punctuation. Particularly when they misspell things like Rivendell (usually as Rivendale, though I've also seen Riverdale), or Gandalf as Gandolf - if they even get that close. Valar forbid that they should attempt to actually use Quenya or Sindarin. Come on kids, read a book. You guys DO know that the books were written LONG before the movies were made, right?

Their, they're, and there are three DIFFERENT words. Its and it's are different as well. So are your and you're. These words are NOT interchangeable, and their misuse only hides your creativity behind a veil of ignorance. If you're going to write, do it well.

Short, sweet, and to the point! :)

True, nobody suffers or dies (except the bad guys), but it does leave a lot of Middle Earth heroes with no job prospects at all.
Comments from author:
Definitely - and a lot of insertion fics are like that, if the powers etc. of the inserted character are used properly it destroys most of the original story - if they aren't, why bother adding the character?

You are a bad, bad person.

Now I want to know how Batman and the Third Doctor would handle it.
Comments from author:
Batman vapes it with the Bat-laser. The Third Doctor avoids the Nazgul in a quarry, disables the orcs with Venusian aikido, sings Shelob to sleep to get past her, and talks Gollum into helping him but is unfortunately forced to knock him out with another Venusian move before he can throw the ring into the volcano.

*snorflegiggle* Loved this, it really does point out the silliness that ensues when an author doesn't balance the power elements in a crossover story. I can imagine that Frodo would much rather his quest ended that way, though.
Comments from author:
Maybe - it does get him back to his armchair much faster.

OMG, does this mean that Dumbledore and Gandalf are the same guy?!

ROFLMAO! You are very right. Some crossovers are totally ridiculous. Wonder what Tolkien would have thought of your solution to the Ring problem?
