Not bad, it’s a nice little balance to other stories where Ethan gleefully hands out costumes at discount prices preferring to get his payoff from the chaos which ensues.
It’s actually just occurred to me that the idea that Xander has restricted funds is a fan fiction concept in itself. In the actual episode he simply seemed pleased that he has managed to put together a costume for so little, there is no indication that he had to get a cheap costume. If it were me and I had no other Halloween plans other than unwillingly escorting some kids around I’d be inclined to spend as little as possible on my costume as well.
Willow was in the same boat and if not for Buffy trying to get her to go a little wild she would have put no more effort or money into her costume than Xander did. Buffy was the only one willing to put more effort into her costume and that was only to impress Angel.
Ideally then a more realistic Halloween story would have another Halloween event (like a party at the Bronze) going on afterward which makes Xander more inclined to spend a little more cash on something better, maybe someday someone will write it.

Nice, realistic. Why would Xander suddenly have (bad) luck and get something for free? In the first fics he got a few dollars discount, but at the later fics he received hundreds of dollar costumes for free.
To be honest, the title made me think of Seinfelt too. (can you imagine Seinfelt doing a standup show at the fish tank? ;-)
Heh. That's a different turn on the standard Halloween formula. I have to admit though for a moment, when I saw the title, I thought you were going to have Xander dress up as the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld or something.

Now THAT would be funny. Someone, Someone who isn't me, and is actually good at this should write it. =p
