If you dont't already know about him, I think you'd enjoy Charles Stross. The ATROCITY ARCHIVES, THE JENNIFER MORGUE and THE FULLER MEMORANDUM would all tie in very nicely with this story.

I seem to vaguely remember that Ballistol was for field-use (wood, leather, metal and wound-treatment), and had to be re-applied every 30 days or so.
