Review of chapter "Promise To Live Free" from Ansku
Review:
Never heard of Falling Skies before, but this was fascinating :)
Comments from author:
It was a ten-episode miniseries on TNT this summer. There should be another "season" next summer... until then, I'm waiting anxiously for the DVDs! Glad you enjoyed the story regardless. =)

correction:
another think coming - another thing coming perhaps?
Comments from author:
No. "you have another think coming" is a turned-around way to say "you need to think again!" I don't know where the "another thing" variation came from. =)

Man. I kept waiting for that little twist in my gut when things suddenly went sideways, but, thankfully, they didn't. You know, it's terrible when 'unexpected twists' are far, far more predictable and expected than a good outcome. Seriously, thank you for not going the standard route; though I wouldn't really expect you to do so anyway.

Now, I've really got to go and watch the first season of "Falling Skies"! Thanks for not only this fabulous crossover, but also for getting me hooked on a new series. First "Leverage", now "Falling Skies".

P.S. I wonder how badly this is going to be Jossed come season 2?
Comments from author:
Badly, I bet. But I had fun writing my version anyway.

The show's very heavy on the Drama and not so much on the Alien Menace, which played better at some points than others; a few of the plot developments made me facepalm from the obvious/stupid. But overall, it's very enjoyable. Just don't think too much about the mechanics of the setup while you're watching it. =)

I thought I was harsh enough on the characters just beating them up so thoroughly during the rescue, and the "All the Queen's Men" chapter, without making things even worse! All of them have already been through such trauma just because of the setting, poor dears.

I did add about 600 words smoothing things out for flow in the DreamWidth upload, but I think I'll leave it be for a few months now, at least until I have the DVDs in hand. I may have to give them a few more adventures before S2 messes with everything.

Review:
Great story, really nice addition to an interesting series. I would love to see it play out like this, but alas, it probably won't. Kudos for shipping Buffy with Kennedy, a unique pairing.
Comments from author:
Thank you! It was an interesting project to write.

I wouldn't have tried the B/K 'ship if I were only writing from TV-compliant canon-- TV Buffy is pretty darned straight-- but the no-more-magic-or-unified-Slayer-Army side effects of the comics finale worked much better for a cross with a post-apocalyptic universe. So I was also left with a Kennedy who'd been dumped by Willow and a Buffy having already experimented with a girl.... it just made sense to me.

Would love to see Spike using his airship to relay messages & supplies for the resistance. If not killed in the initial bombing, Angel's gang or parts of it might still be around. Connor would make an excellent resistance fighter, and Illyria would have the time of her life. Try to harness that!
Will you hold off on a sequel until the 2nd season begins? Long wait for that, I think, i.e. next summer
Comments from author:
Since I'm pretty sure the 2nd season will deal with Mason's capture vastly differently, probably not. Maybe this winter, either November or January, when my writing schedule isn't otherwise committed.

I would like to touch on the others at least a little; this fic was mostly about establishing the universe and rescuing Mason, but the next will have space for more contact. Since I do believe Spike got Dawn and Xander out of San Francisco ahead of the bombs, and Angel, Faith, Connor, and Illyria could be using Illyria's old dusty pocket dimension as a safe haven. =)

Good work ladies! The intel they brought back was at least as valuable as the confidence boost of a successful rescue. Now all they have to do is spread the info to the other militias and get everyone out of the area before the bad guys sterilize it for a 100 miles in every direction :)
I'm looking forward to more work by you in this verse.

Awww, its over. I've thoroughly enjoyed this, it really captured that *feel* from the series and also is so clearly reminiscent of Buffy and the slayers. A suitably exciting rescue, somehow i don't think it will go that way in the second season. ;-) And although I hate the idea of so many of my favorite BtVS characters having died in the invasion, I think you did a good job of surrounding Buffy with a few familiar characters but also unexpected ones. I enjoyed that.

Review:
Time to break contact and they already have three wounded or incapacitated :( Like Buffy said just then, while they are moving there is still hope. Maybe the other Slayer will come out to find them again and help out. I would have thought it would make sense to have a rally point slightly different to the site of the last battle though. Wouldn't the skitters already know where the school is?

So what we have here is a failure to communicate? Sounds like they need to create some radio transmitters maybe using vacuum tubes and 'communicate' some more. Very loudly. Though realistically given the situation, it's all over & the collaborators have the right idea.
Comments from author:
LOL, no. *Any* attempt to communicate that way just hurts the skitters' ear analogues, see the episodes with Ben cringing in pain when Scott hit their frequencies for example. And they don't really care what we'd *say* anyway, as Mason just explained in the fic. They're arrogant child slavers who really hoped they could afford to leave a decent breeding population behind. There's no negotiating with that mindset.

Edit: Unless you meant to say "resistance" instead of "collaborators". Yeah, I think the Second Mass will be using that information a lot more....

after this, the rest is gonna be easy! Or something. Boy, the aliens aren't going to be too happy; this is the first time actual overseers not just flunkies have gotten killed.

Yeah, I'm sure that was the hardest bit right? Right? I hope they keep their wits about them when they get to the collaborator.

Love, love, LOVE this fic! Seriously - I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying every update. And here - we get to see Mason rescued in addition to Karen. They can start a short, feisty blonde club with the other blonde. Either way, thank you for not letting this stop at a one-shot. It's been such a pleasure to read, and I continue to look forward to every update.

Thanks again!

Well , they aren't doing tooo bad so far. I dunno how they are going to get their passengers to the ground though. I kinda hope they do try flying a shuttle or something, that would be pretty cool.
