I think this is the simplest way to have detailed it. The wrenching agony of it is that saying he'll never learn the tragic ending isn't comforting at all... certainly not to this guy.
Most things we say about dying are for the benefit of those left behind, so maybe that's no surprise. I do wonder if you'll write the tale of the other viewpoints, especially if his power overloaded during death, as happens with some Legacy victims.
