One minor quibble here. Given that Xander is pretty much keeping his memories fresh constantly on the Hellmouth, wouldn't he have at least gone to college if not med school? I mean, I could see him bar tending to put himself through school , but he's got the mind of a fully trained surgeon in his head. Even if the techniques are a bit antiquated, Hawkeye was a doctor before he was drafted. Xander should have the chops to at least get accepted if not earn a full scholarship.

A Mainer on the Hellmouth. Far more dangerous than any normal soldier. I always loved the books, the movie and the show. This just fits perfectly, even if I wish it was a longer story.

I won't add a "Korea, damnit!" - I think you've got enough of those. :-)
I do think one of your reviewers missed the whole point of MASH (or is too young to remember). It certainly wasn't pro-war propaganda. Quite the opposite. Besides, most of it's 11 season run post-dated the war.
Not a bad ficlet, if a bit confusing with everything you're trying to cram into it.
If you're going on with this then maybe the Council would pay for updated medical training and a legal medical license after the First is taken care of. A lot has happened since Korea in the medical field and the Hawkeye part of him would be very aware of it.
Otherwise (and you're going to fix the Korea/Vietnam mix up aren't you?) this is a very good idea. Xander's humor and Hawkeye's would meld nicely. Just don't lose all of Xander.
If he does end up in med school he could he meet up with the senior Hawkeye. ( I really liked 'Shoveling' that had them meeting up previously.) Also this would make a funny cross up with House
Anyhow-- good idea as I said before.
