I liked this... it was nice how you made Xander just a carpenter in ME, instead of some important advisor to the king or some other similarly dramatic circumstance.

However (and here comes the Tolkien-geek in me) if the 'great war' you referred to was the War of the Ring, Theoden was dead (killed during the Battle of Pelennor Fields) and the king would have been Eomer, brother of Eowyn and probably even more cautious about whom she would marry. And I'm kinda wondering what happened to Faramir... did she simply not hook up with him in the houses of healing as was put forth in the book?

In any case, nice story, sweet but not cloying. Thanks :)
