Review of chapter "Epilogue: A New Line of Work" from MarcusSLazarus
Review:
Interesting idea, really (If nothing else, I wasn’t always sure about how Wesley was meant to have survived Justine’s attack), I’ll give you that.

I don’t exactly agree with the idea that Wesley would be able to recover from a bullet to the head- if decapitation can kill Immortals, surely that kind of brain damage should at least have long-term effects, even if the bullet can be removed eventually-, but his emotional state after what happened certainly works, as he finds himself contemplating the futility of his life now that he’ll be around long enough to see the long-term consequences of it and bitterly focusing on the mistakes eeveryone else has made rather than the positives, to say nothing of your exploration of his subsequent relationship with Lilah actually making sense (It always just seemed a bit random in the series, but the idea that he appreciated the fact that she saw something of worth in him when nobody else did IS interesting, even without Wes’s reflections on why even an evil version of him wouldn’t want to destroy the world)...

I’m not sure about Gunn and Fred trying to contact Wes during the summer- I think Gunn would accept that they’ve closed that particular door and leave it, particularly since there wasn’t any obvious need for any expertise that Wesley alone could give them-, and I think comparing Lilah to Xander in terms of world-view doesn’t work as Xander was convinced he knew how to define everyone where Lilah’s only certain about herself and seems to regard everyone else as eventually going to ‘fall off the wagon’ if given the right ‘incentive’, but Wesley’s disposal of Justine worked, and I certainly admired both your exploration of Lilah’s motives for joining Wolfram & Hart and the loophole that explains how she never actually worked for them.

The idea of Angel or Angelus being suicidal doesn’t work- Angelus is too arrogant to ever want to eliminate the chance that he could get out again, and Angel hasn’t exactly done enough this time out to make him want to go that way-, but even with his later dismissal of Buffy- she didn’t exactly survive seven years (The Glory situation was a highly unprecedented situation that ANYONE would have had trouble with, so I think what happened to her there can’t exactly count against her) by being as stupid as he implies- the circumstances under which ‘Cordelia’/‘Jasmine’ is exposed in this world more than make up for that.

Plus, at least they all worked fairly well together while confronting Caleb and the First in Sunnydale; he might occasionally think Buffy’s making mistakes, but at least he doesn’t get in her face about them and gives her a chance to redeem herself with her later plans, and the ending at least lends some hope that they’ll find some kind of middle ground later on as they continue to fight the good fight, even if they aren’t fighting it together.

All in all, while Wesley seems a bit too ‘eager’ to criticise his old friends when he’s hardly Mr Clean himself- maybe they’ve made mistakes, but considering that Wesley ended up learning about his immortality because he was fooled by a fake prophecy he’s far from the right person to criticise everyone else for not being perfect-, along with a few other minor characterisation moments mentioned above, your concept is generally good, some highly promising plot twists are included, and the ending is generally satisfactory.
Comments from author:
Wesley's is a hypocrite as much as everyone else. I don't agree with everything that Wesley does or thinks, but he is the hero of this story.

And Angelus wasn't really serious when he threatened suicide, so much as trying to make Lilah and Wesley think he was serious.

I'm working from Highlander Logic, which, when you get right down to it, doesn't make sense. But I assume immortals have taken severe head wounds without dying before (given how many times they do 'die', it seems likely), or suffering catastrophic brain damage.

Fred obviously in canon did want to contact Wes. Gunn didn't, as we know.

And thanks for the review! I'm glad you liked it.

I really am glad I finished this. I was really turned off when they headed to Sunnydale and you seemed so down on Buffy. I stopped reading and lost track of the story for months before coming back to read it after it was finished... and was delighted to discover that Buffy wasn't made out to be a fool. I have no problem with a main character not liking someone, or even when a character is written so you slowly see them turn into an honest to goodness villain, but character bashing, even of characters I detest bugs me. (I use the characters I detest for things like onscreen grisly but heroic deaths or occasionally off screen as exes, etc. They can be useful and I actually made myself cry when I killed off both Andrew and Kennedy in TFD)

Anyway... I like the way things ended, and I LOVE that you saved the guardian. I was pissed that she died in canon.

You are too hard on yourself about battles... it was fine. You used a bit more of canon than I would have, but that is all.

Comments from author:
I was pretty hard on Buffy, I admit. I don't hate her, I just think she suffers from very bad judgement - Wesley does Hate her, and since he's the primary viewpoint character, (and the fact that I don't think well of her judgement skills), so a real hitting on Buffy does bleed through the early Sunnydale Chapters, I agree. I'm glad you managed to get past those parts to the later parts.

Thanks for the review!

I found this to be a most enjoyable story. You really kept faithful to Wesley and Lilah. I actually started reading this before I saw S3 of Angel, so while I knew Wesley died on the show, I thought it was due to Justine, as you put in here. Imagine my surprise...

I also like that you didn't shoehorn in any HL characters, as most do.

I do think it got a bit muddled when the locale moved to Sunnydale -- but many stories do.

Overall, very good.
Comments from author:
I had a whole lot more characters to deal with, once things got into Sunnyhell, and a lot more events to pack in, so, yea things do get a little confusing.

Anyway, I'm very glad that you liked it. Thanks for the review!

Good ending I suppose. I really don't like the NCIS reference though, I just don't like those kind of crossovers. I mean I used to like NCIS as it was, but the idea of it crossing over with a supernatural or scifi show is just weird and unenjoyable to me. I suppose I have seen one or two good ones, but in general I just think it's a very strange crossover as the two don't really easily overlap. Well, other than Abby, but that's not much.
Comments from author:
Okay. Well, sorry to hear that.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the fic though.

When you said blood king my first thought went to Lost Girl. Looks like an NCIS cross instead?
Comments from author:
Indeed.

If you'll recall, the 'Blood King' got mentiond earlier in the fic.

Meeting the NCIS team. Interesting. Not sure how thats going to go. Loved the story. Its been too long since a real Highlander crossover has been done with justice. It seems only those of us who remember the shows and movies still keep them on mind. People today wouldn't recall them unless there made into a new god awful reboot.

Have you any thought towards Wesley gettin a proper teacher? I totaly agree with him on the whole swords in the 21 century being stupid when you can just shoot someone. And that the only rule, don't die....or kill on holy ground are the whos anyone should follow.

But Wesley has hit the gym, expanded his mind with countless books, and picked up a fair number of modern weapons. But few can disscount what an immortal could teach him about a sword. Or the other tricks.

In the first highlander movie Conner was connected to a stag, able to feel his heart beating and run with it. And of course walk underwater without dieing or needing to breath. Its canon, if left out of the Highlander series.

At any rate, can't wait to hear more from you.

Comments from author:
I never saw the movie. Just the series. I originally saw bits of it when my Mom did - she's a huge Adrian Paul fan - and I watched it all on Hulu a while ago. While watching it, I got the idea for this fic.

Its possible he may get an immortal mentor. Right now, the broad strokes of the DMW series involve a variety of crossovers with procedureal crime shows (NCIS, Castle, White Collar and Burn Notice, which isn't really a crime show, true), with some 'episodes' at Watchers HQ in Cleveland and maybe the odd encounter with other immortals. A fight or two. Lilah taking a head. That kind of thing. We'll see how things go.

Anyway, thanks for the review, and I'm glad you like it.

Hey, since apparently you're also familiar with NCIS, you want to beta-read Dead Man Walking in D.C., when I get on with the first chapter of that? (have to update/start some other fics first)

i think it's rather fitting that Angel and Cordelia were there at the final battle of Sunnydale... since they were there in the beginning. I'm also glad Anya lived...

She didn't deserve to die saving Andrew of all people.

Thank you for writing the episode as it should have been written.

If someone had a really warped sense of humor, it would be Andrew in the amulet rather than Spike.

Edit: "Why were you in the amulet instead of Spike?"

"Spike was reassigned to a man named Jack Harkness. They needed a soul to stick in the amulet and mine was the only one handy."
Comments from author:
Andrew is too fail for be able to use it right.

Ahh, someone who shares my dislike of Andrew living while so many much cooler and likeable characters died. It made no sence. But then, Joss hasn't made sence in years. "Points at comics".

I didn't think I'd like Wesley as the main character so much. But I do. Its very entertaining in a british way. Any thoughts on other stories? Or keeping him immortal? Can't wait to read the end, see how it all turns out.

Always thought Xander & Wesley could play off each other pretty well. Could you see those to snarking on someone? Wesley dry witt and Xander's off handed humor? Or even add Cordeila in, girl can snark with the best of them.

Update soon.

Comments from author:
Working on the Epilogue now.

I do indeed intend more fics in this universe. Crossovers with NCIS, Burn Notice, White Collar, and Castle (probably in that order, as well), probably some shorter stuf having Wesley and Lilah back at the new watchers HQ as well.

I'm glad you liked it. Wesley is staying immortal - I'm not sure Highlander Immortals can 'unimmortal' anyway.

Thanks for the review!

It's been a long time since I saw this, but it seems to me that the First said something to Buffy at the school which later lead to her proposing her "idea".

So Buffy's plan is somebody else's, I liked the series better. Too much? Yanking a thousands of years old woman's arm should affect more than her dignity. Angel is wall furniture or was he there?
Good to see the story continues looking forward to more.
Comments from author:
If she was a normal human of a thousand years, she'd be dead.

How the hell did Buffy Come up with it, if she didn't know that the Scythe could do it. That's called Joss being a Bad Writer.

And, my dear mentally befuddled reader, did you even notice how Angel wasn't one of the four that left?

If you don't like this fic, why are you reading it? Shoo.
