Review of chapter "Herald of the Ancient Gods" from ScorpioP
Somehow I missed this was a Whedon film, so I just watched it yesterday. I too was struck by how well "Cabin" would fit in the Buffyverse.

If you think about it, there was a whole lot of destruction shown at the other ritual sites on the monitors. It's not that far-fetched to imagine the new Slayers Council finding out about the ritual in some way and shutting it down.

Thanks very much for the review.

I never thought of your idea of the Council taking out all the other rituals as well, but that's a pretty good one.

Oh hell yeah! As much as I loved the ending of "Cabin," this little crossover definitely steals the thunder and goes to town! Plus, the cameo by Weaver is like an apology for what happened to the script for "Alien: Resurrection" :D

Dude, I totally had that exact same feeling. It finished, I laughed but kinda felt gypped, and then I thought, hey, this is Wheadon, what are the odds that the slayers didn't have a slayer dream warning that the ancients are rising? And what are the odds that they (or hey, the avengers) couldn't handle a couple puny gods? The world's totally gonna be fine. And then felt better so i decided I loved the movie.

Anyhow, awesome story, you really filled in all the blanks to tie everything together. I loved Illya helping Buffy to take down the ancient one, and the friendly demon (very Btvs-esque).

Thanks for writing and sharing.

So, at first I was just waiting for someone to do a cross with CitW but after a while it seemed my wish was not to be granted. And now, I find this beautiful piece of work. Well after you've posted it.

I love the chopper line. That made me chuckle. And Illyria showing up was just what I had in mind. Though in my version she just smiles with glee. Maybe that was even her that was sabotaging the work at the lab.

Great job.
Comments from author:
When I first saw CitW, I hadn't yet watched Angel, so even though I did some research I didn't really make the connection that Amy Acker played Illyria/Fred. But your point has merit -- perhaps she was using her newfound humanity to take a role in the... whatever it was they were doing... in the lab.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the review.

And now your version of events is mine. I agree that Buffy and crew standing at the top of the stairs waiting to end the apocalypse would have been awesome.
Comments from author:
Thanks. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that way. Appreciate the review.

I liked it.
Sure, it would have been roughly 3400% better if we'd actually SEEN Faith mowing her way through the monster mobs, but failing that, it was still nice to see her showing up 'Big Damn Hero' style (since we're merging all Joss creations into a single megaverse).

Bonus points for Illyria's cameo, of course, though I prefer 'Big Blue' to 'Little Shiva'. 'Smurf' would also have been acceptable.

Anyways, nicely done.

Thanks; I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

I wanted to crank it out as fast as possible, and focus on the CitW characters, so I skimped on the monster fighting. Plus, I only saw the movie once and didn't remember all the monsters. Also, at that point I hadn't seen all of Angel so I just picked a nickname off Illyria's Buffy wiki page.

A really nice (and believable as fiction can be since fanfic does require a little suspension of disbelief) crossover and I'm just pissed I hadn't thought of writing a drabble about it first.

When I saw the movie the other night, for some reason, I kept thinking of the ending to "Fight Club" when the world is being blown to hell around them while "Where is my Mind" by the Pixies plays in the end of the movie.

I'm not going to say anything else about the end of "Cabin" though. All I can say to those who haven't seen it, it's actually an amusing film to watch.

At least to me anyway.

This was originally supposed to be a drabble, where after the final line, we pan up and WHAM! there's Buffy at the top of the steps in her "grumpy Buffy arms-folded" pose. I also played around with the idea of one of the good guys killing Marty anyway, to keep the demon down. But as you can see that's not quite what happened.

Review of chapter "Herald of the Ancient Gods" from KevinSchultz
Just saw it last night - and I figured there wouldn't be a Buffy tie-in when we got the "Yeah, Dana - you ready to be strong?" line. (If you're throwing one-off references to another series, that's a good hint that there isn't going to be an explicit crossover happening.) Ah, well - good line, though.

And I think the folks in the lab HAD seen a lot of slasher movies - that was kind of the point: they had been consistently successful at setting up these sacrifices for well over a decade at least. The last time anything went wrong was 1999 - they mentioned it right at the beginning. This is the story about the lab's only real failure.

EDIT - sorry, I was unclear. At the beginning of the movie, one of the scientists says "We haven't lost anyone since 1999, and that was biochemestry's fault. Hey, what group do you work in, again?" And then he drives off in the golf cart. The implication is that they've been doing this sacrifice thing for quite a while, and are actually quite successful at it. The additional comments about their rivalry with the Japanese seems to support this: again, according to the comments at the beginning of the movie, the american lab is #2 in successfull sacrifices. As such, this tells us that the labs all over the world have been doing this successfully for quite some time - but that THIS particular movie is about the one time they all horribly, horribly fail.
Comments from author:
In retrospect, I think that line is what made me think "Buffy tie-in". I use "are you ready to be strong" in all my fanfic, so I guess it was front-of-mind.

What slasher movie came out in 1999 that was a failure in the sacrifice? I found this list (, but I'm not really a horror film consumer (I prefer the written version to the on-screen version) so I don't know which one it might have been.

Thanks for reading.

What I was waiting for was the point where they realize that Marty is the virgin and Dana's the fool.

But having Illyria put a smack down on the ancient one was worth it too.

Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.

Excellent work.

I thought the exact same thing! I really expected Buffy and the Slayer Army to show up and kick some Evil God ass just after the final blackout. I also kept thinking, "Didn't any of these morons who think they are running things actually read the after action reports on the Initiative?" And hadn't any of the five sacrifices ever SEEN a teen slasher movie? All in all I thought the whole movie fit perfectly into the Buffyverse.

Thanks; I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

I think they could've even spoofed the Buffy connection by having SMG in a coda after the credits, relaxing at home with Freddie Prinze and their kid, and he could say something like "hey, that looks like something from that Buffy show you were on." Then the another giant hand smashes them.

If that thought made you a bad person then I must be positively evil, cause I was thinking the exact samething, but I had subbed Buffy with Glowing-white hairded Willow!! It just screamed Scooby-time at the end!!

See? I _knew_ it wasn't just me.
