Review of chapter "Not Quite a Daddy" from naraic
Review:
Just read this.

Good Job. Nice to see no bashing in a story like this. I don't think you got Xander's reaction quiet right I think there would have been an emotional explosion followed by brooding followed by realisation that this is the mayor followed by what you showed.
Comments from author:
Maybe he's in a serious state of denial so that he doesn't have to deal with the other emotional responses.

Review:
I totally agree about some of the stories being blatant Buffy bashes. Xander IS my favorite character since the series started but I will also admit to utterly loathing the character arcs of Buffy and Willow. I do truly dislike where they ended up as people, especially after season 3. Having said that though, I really don't like the bashing stories. Having a character get their BS brought out into the open and confronted, sure, but these people ARE friends. Xander became a incredibly underutilized character in the service of some PC notion of 'girl power' by the producers.

Anyhoo, keep up the great work. Thanks.
Comments from author:
Glad to hear that a Xan-fan liked the story. That means I did something right. (I'll just ignore the ones that said I screwed up his reaction). *grin*

Probably a variation on this. I think Xander would need the roadtrip to get to this point, but he'd get there.
Comments from author:
Assuming anyone could prove to his satisfaction that the Mayor wasn't lying through his demony teeth.

Good, good story. You're right that Xander would be skeptical, and for good reason--Faith was practically the biggest ho in Sunnydale, the inventor of the two H's--Hungry and Horny. God knows how many men she had sex with before Xander and afterwards. And honestly, it's just unrealistic she didn't pass along an STD to him. Given that fact about Faith, Xander would have had to have been a fool to just take anyone's word the baby was his. Hell, he likely would have hocked everything he owned to scrap up enough money for a DNA test just to prove that kid wasn't his!

I think you got Xander's reaction right. And if there had been proof the baby was his? I think he would have been dancing with relief on one hand and guilt on the other for feeling relief. He was an eighteen year old without a job, money, a real home . . .He was going out into the World with only a lousy High School diploma. What could he give a baby?

Although, IF Faith had been pregnant with his baby and both survived, I could see him enlisting the help of his chosen family, and sitting on her for nine months. Then, after the baby was born, getting rid of her--He could be ruthless when his own was involved, and Faith had crossed too many lines for him to have mercy on her.

Yeah, I guess that's that. You did a good job here, and I just wanted to say so.

Thank you.
Comments from author:
Well, I'm hoping he was smart enough to wear a condom, but I suppose if it broke and she got pregnant, he would probably get whatever diseases she was carrying. Then again, maybe the Slayer's immune system keeps her from getting diseases like that?

I'm not sure they would kill Faith if she was alive and pregnant with Xander's kid, but they might turn her over to the Council once she gave birth.

Review:
This is of course assuming that his protective instincts for his "girls" were stronger than that of a to young parent to a lost child. With all of the crap that the Mayor pulled its to far out of what they would accept without more proof then the vid and some papers made to order. 'sides why was she fighting if she was pregnant?

I'll stop myself ranting now. The point is that it could have easily gone either way because of their situations, character, and age. Good oneshot, thanks!
Comments from author:
Well, to be fair to Faith, she might not have known she was pregnant. The Mayor might have found out after Buffy stabbed her. Not entirely sure it would have made a difference to Faith at that point in canon though.

hmm I know some of the stories of Xander going ballistic over that, but sadly yours don't sit very well either.

Somewhere in the middle yes, but this was to smooth in my opinion.
Comments from author:
Obviously I was too subtle in my approach, but Xander's reaction is that he simply doesn't believe that Faith was actually pregnant. Percentage-wise, it'd be like 90% disbelief, 5% stunned and in shock, 3% relieved he doesn't have to be a teen dad and 2% grief...that has yet to surface.

I don't think he'd just say that. I can see being forgiving and understanding, but after a very long and thoughtful break with some serious brood time or the equivalent of.
Comments from author:
Like I said to another reviewer, deep in his heart, Xander doesn't believe the story. Any reaction past that is just surface stuff.

Definitely didn't seem like a bash in any way. Good job.
Comments from author:
Doesn't seem to feel good to people who think Xander should have been angry or sad about a child that may or may not have been real.

Wow. A Xander-centric story that *doesn't* involve Buffy-bashing - who knew? I had theorized that they might exist, but actual evidence of one - amazing. :-)
Comments from author:
Well, when I'm the author, it's Xander that has to fear the bashing. Hope you still agree it wasn't that kind of a fic.

Review:
Actually this would be quite believable. Xander is too good at hiding his real pain to his friends at this point. He'd grieve later.
Comments from author:
Assuming he starts to doubt his first reaction of it not even being true. Why grieve something you think is a lie? If anything, I would expect him to get angry at the Mayor for trying to drive a wedge between them.

Sweet Baby Jesus!! You had me worried there for a few seconds! I thought I was going to have to say, 'Et tu, Brute?' Thankfully that wasn't the case. Thank you, Jesus! Although, the fact that you were nice to Xander causes me suspicion. You weren't sick or anything, were you?!? Because that's about the *only* time I can see you actually being nice to Xander.

*wanders off, muttering to self* 'What is this world coming to? Being nice to Xander on purpose?!? It just isn't right. My entire belief system is being called into question...'

Review:
I don't think he would be so flippant of it i think there would be greif and regret that he couldn't save her but on the other hand what you are leaving out was that she stabbed faith to save Angel she killed a human however inadvertently to save the vampire I don't think that would sit well with him I think you are kind of down playing how he would react i think first off he would want to think about it by himself for awhile i think it would have made him more introspective and he definitely would not be joking about it i get what your saying about the whole buffy hateing thing its just there response seems kinda shallow .
Comments from author:
Buffy stabbed an enemy to save an ally. An enemy who was responsible for that ally being in trouble in the first place. That's the important part of the equation you left out, not that it was human vs. vampire.

The big thing is that Xander doesn't trust the Mayor and doesn't believe the story of Faith being pregnant. Don't have to get all thoughtful for something you don't believe.
