Just a small note, it would be slightly easier for readers if you made this into a series.
The benefits would be that the readers would be able to easily start with the correct story and proceed through in sequence.
There is a possibility for more reviews as readers read more stories rather than presuming that because there is not a series, there is no more chapters. (I nearly did this on reaching the end of the first story and seeing that the story was complete and not seeing a follow up.)
Otherwise, good writing and and enjoyable read, thank you for the obvious effort that you went to with these.

Having read In Their Shadow and City of Shadows I am starting to see a pattern. You have real problem with ending stories in the middle. Fortunately there is already a sequel.
