It's a two way street, we should have seen Xander's soul as well.
Comments from author:
I was writing from Xander's perspective during that part and switching over to Ebenezar's perspective to describe the other half of the soul gaze threw the whole chapter out of wack. Though I might be describing a little of what Ebenezar saw in the next chapter.

I say let the wizard council kill Xander, if I remember reading the books correctly years ago they are very arrogant morons. Then maybe Darth Willow could wipe out the existence of the Desden dimension not to mention battle those fairies.

It was close enough to an alternate version of Dresden's very brief description in the book series that it flowed perfectly. I look forward to the next chapter.
Soulgaze is tough to do right, you did fine. Eb. took a real risk doing that, if X. had been hiding a lot of evil it could have damaged him. So... Xander is presumably a descendant of some wizard who went out the Gates. With his luck, somebody with a really bad rep & they'll realize he's a relative. Sounds like Kathy might end up working for the Summer Queen. Hm. I wonder what would happen if someone soul gazed a slayer? There's a lot in there; the slayer herself, and the 'slayer essence' which is demonic in origin. That could get rough. Please have Faith fight one of the local vamps. Could be fun. Also, any chance any of them arrivals has a duplicate in this dimension? It is pretty close to the world they came from...

I think this story is well placed between Turncoat and Changes. I'm also reading Ghost Story currently and I'm about ready to chew on someone to get a copy of Cold Days. :)

I'm very fond of both BTVS & TDF and I'm glad that there's a good crossover on them. I wish that Faith and the others would have taken longer to mount a rescue effort though. I would have loved for Harry and Xander to spend more time trading snarky banter before other people gets involved.
