Review of chapter "Quiet Birthday" from JJDudeman
I'll admit, I was kind of ambivalent about the concept of Cass + Slayer, but by choosing her at a younger time than we met her, you've channeled her charm into an adorable package.

SO, here's installment 2. Can't say I loved the Xander negativity, but the problem is, it's probably more in character than I'd like to admit. The big thing there is you kept the incident and fallout short, preventing it from really derailing things like so many "bashing" fics.

Lastly, I am a HUGE Steph fan. She's my favorite Batgirl, period, even though Cass is (was? sigh) one of the best original characters DC's had in a while. (Such a crime Steph's series died so young!) And the Stephanie/Cassandra friendship brought so much to both girls, choosing to bring that into this 'verse was a very good idea. Imagining them playing just makes me smile.

I fear you may have made things harder, in future sections writing Steph in general and Buffy's suggested NYC life in particular might be tough, but I bet you're up for the challenge if you want to pursue it. Nice fics.
Comments from author:
Cass really doesn't need to be a Slayer, but the idea came to me as good one-shot fuel, and it kinda snowballed.

Xander really has a strong kneejerk response to things -- he tends to quickly become angry, then almost as quickly forgive. In this case, he has a right to be angry (Buffy not only shunned him for a few years, but she actually repeatedly knocked him out to keep him away, which is just not right). He didn't have a right to talk about the Cass situation, but when has that ever stopped him? This certainly wasn't done to bash, it just all seemed to be the way that the characters would react to the situation. Which is also why I made sure to resolve it quickly.

I'm fond of Steph myself (not as much as Cass, but there aren't many characters I prefer to Cass). The moment her series really grabbed me was her battle with Livewire. "Apparently. You learn something new every day." Priceless. The two of them made great friends, too, which is why I felt a need to bring her in.

This will be complicated with this setup, I admit. Cass and Steph from a young age, both Slayers, and the butterfly effect pulling them out of Gotham will have. And of course, with Steph's dad, she still has a strong connection to Gotham. And New York is a very busy place, where they could get into all kinds of trouble in the DCU. Still, I have a lot of ideas, and plan to work on this in the near future.

Thanks for the review!

The two first stories in your Cassandra the Vampire Slayer series were excellent. I look forward to reading more.

Thank you for reviewing! I'm actually in a holding pattern until I can get a trade paperback ordered -- I had an idea for a subplot, but I don't own a copy of some material I wanted to reference, so I have to order the book in question. Hopefully the next piece in this series should hit sometime in February.

Someday a doomsday cult will pick a town in Nebraska for their Dread Lord's triumphant return, instead of wherever the top slayer lives. Oh well.
Hm, little hint by Cain about Cass's mom. That should be fun. And, the other has a masked villain from Gotham as a dad? What a pair.
Comments from author:
Yeah, I couldn't do Cass without Steph -- they can get into so much fun trouble together. And they both have enough messes in their backstories even without being Slayers to keep things interesting.

Thanks for reviewing!

Steph and Cass? Even better! I like the fact that you're getting Cass to talk without the loss of her ability to read body language. Really enjoying this series so far and as always I'm looking forward to more.
Comments from author:
Yup -- they make a fun team. I read the arc where she gained her ability to speak, and it struck me that the telepath who did it had no experience when he tried. Someone with skill probably could have done better. Thanks for the review!

The first one was good, this one I even like more.

Xander can still be a jerk who still forgets that even Buffy is human and that everybody grieves differently. Okay she pushed him away, so that hurts but Dawn was her little sister who was made out of Buffy. Losing her is losing a piece from herself, Like with parents losing a child I think. When react that way. The only thing you can do is respect their choice and being a friend to be there when she is ready to deal with everything.

His reaction was uncalled and unnecessary. A well all turned out well again.

I loved how Buffy shows Cain his spot. I hope that Cain will respect and appreciate what Buffy will give his little girl. You know whats funny. Buffy forgets that training with Cassandra she will become better also. So it will be a little longer before Cass will become much better than Buffy. I can't wait for Cassandra to teach Buffy her abilities. Could be fun a little child becoming the teacher and Buffy the student. A well being The Slayer for so long it won't be as hard as for a mini slayer to learn.

can't wait for the next story. Good writing.
Comments from author:
I really felt that that was the way Xander would react. Sort of a cross between how he acted when Buffy ran away after Season 2, mixed with his quick to anger but quicker to forgive during their spat in Season 6. He had tried to be there for her before, but when she wouldn't let him, he got angry and when he saw her again, he said some things he immediately regretted, as he did on several occasions during the series.

Buffy has already learned something directly from Cass -- I mentioned that she had learned her morning training routine, which they did in addition to Buffy's tai chi (picked up from Angel in season 3). And of course, sparring with someone so skilled on a daily basis will teach some things just from that. She hasn't taught any of her more unusual skills though, but that could come up eventually -- I'll have to consider that (could be interesting).

Thanks for the review!

Excellent story with some very nice characterizations. I like it that Faith, the Slayer who went to the Dark Side and then came back, was the one to help Cass in her moment of despair.

I hope your next update is soon. I really want to see Buffy and her two Slayer daughters kick some evil butts in the Big Apple. I also hope they eventually run into the Bat. I think the three would be one of the few things in life that might just crack the Bat's cool. Especially since they are "hot chicks with superpowers" and all three speak "Buffyish" rather then English. Lol!
Comments from author:
I considered bringing Angel or Spike in to talk to her, but decided that Faith would be more appropriate. She really seemed like the best person for the job.

I have ideas for quite a few good adventures, both Buffyish and DC style. And I have plans for a Batman meeting -- big plans. He's not going to be easy to write, but I think I have a good angle on it. In the Batgirl comic I noticed Stephanie using a few Buffyisms, and of course Cass will imitate whoever is teaching her, so she's a lost cause. Anyway, thanks for the review!

I was really enjoying this series, and now you brought in Stephanie as well. I'm hooked :)
Comments from author:
I'm a bit of a fan of Stephanie myself -- she's like Buffy-lite, with a Faith-lite backstory, except bumbling yet enthusiastic. I really like the way she and Cass interact, so I had to bring her in to the mix. Thanks for the review!
