Review of chapter "Evening Shift at the Hanged Man" from EKyuchi
Review:
Great job with this! I really liked how you used Varric as the narrator. I wish there was more so I could find out what Buffy did but it's good as a stand alone too.
Comments from author:
Thank you -- Varric's narration was one of the best parts of the game and was one of the main inspirations for this. I had some ideas about what would happen, but they would've been novel length (at least) and I never committed to writing them. Still, it was intended as a one shot, and I think it works okay just as that.

Review:
By the Maker, this is intriguing. I was actually upset when I reached the end because of how different this idea is. I'm one of the defiant few who defend that game as I have since it came out, so I know what you mean. Please say you'll write something to continue this. I've been tortuously unable to write any DA stuff and I'm glad you did a good job.
Comments from author:
I keep poking away at a growing outline for a sequel to this. It has two problems, though. The first is the 'growing' part, which is to say, the idea I have is probably novel length. I'm not afraid of writing something that size, but it's a pretty big time commitment. The second, is that the idea I have is pretty dark and depressing. It wouldn't start that way, but like the game... I'd have to include the 'tragedy' tag on ff.net/ao3 for the end. Actually, my ending makes the game's look cheerful. The last time I tried to write a dark fic I stopped after about 8000 words, so I'm a bit wary to try it.

I'm not saying I _won't_ write it, but I haven't put any fingers to keyboard for it yet, either. Of course, I might come up with other ideas as well -- as I said, I'm only poking at ideas for an outline.

Review:
My only real issue with Dragon Age II was the repetative maps. I have no clue how many times I went to the same warehouse/tunnel/cave/deep road (it was after all one map). If they had fixed that I would have adored the game as a whole, as opposed to just the story.
Loved the story. Excellent characterization, and well written dialogue. Pity it's just a one shot, but some things are best when short.
Comments from author:
The maps were somewhat annoying, but compared to how wonderful the rest was, it was easy to ignore. I'd rather they spent their time and effort on other things instead of blowing the whole budget on level design.

I'm glad you liked it, and thank you for the review!

Review:
I like this. There's not a lot of Dragon Age crossovers out there, which is a shame, and those that do exist are usually crossed into the first game. If you write any more in this verse I'll be there to read it.

That said, I completely agree with you about DA2. It was a good game in itself, but it wasn't what a lot of fans of the first game expected or wanted so the reviews weren't nearly as good as they could have been. I think that aside from the complaints about the game being rushed, and whining about the writers, the main issue people had with the game was that ass a sequel to the first game it didn't really *feel* like a sequel so much as a semi-related side story designed as the set up for an actual sequel. A lot of important things happened, but they didn't seem to be on the same scale of epicness as the first game- and a lot of things that appeared in the first game to be important to any sequels just didn't get much focus in Hawke's story as people expected. I really liked DA2, to the point where I shelled out a crazy amount of cash to buy all the DLCs and have replayed it multiple times, but I can see why a lot of other people didn't like it. I'm guessing that DA3 will probably be more of the same- I've heard its going to be open world style, and that alone will likely annoy previous fans who liked just clicking on locations on a map regardless of how good or bad the actual plot is.
Comments from author:
Actually, the funny thing is, by containing events to Kirkwall things didn't seem as epic, but the ending of the first game was largely a return to status quo, while the end of the second was the destruction of some of the biggest and most powerful social institutions on half the continent.

I'm actually afraid of DA3 -- the developers said they are playing a bunch of Skyrim around the office to get ideas, and I HATE the Elder Scrolls games. I played Morrowind for a few hours and never found a quest (not just a major plot -- I didn't get any real quests in my log and just wandered around getting killed by random wildlife unable to find anything to do). I hesitated, but was eventually talked into getting Oblivion, which I played for about six hours before giving up through sheer boredom. DA:O is in my top ten games list, and DA2 is my second favorite of all time, so making the series more like one I hate isn't what I'm hoping for.

Anyway, thank you for the review!

Review:
I loved this short and the very Varric-y way it was written. I agree that Dragon Age 2 was a solid game, but I they overuse of areas and simply blocking off certain doors certain years was a bit frustrating. For me the game play was ok, it did go far from Dragon Age : Origins, but my main gripe was if you tried to up the difficulty. Kinda hard to play when your two warriors two-shot one another. My griping aside, wanted to say that I'd love to see a few sequels as to the Slayer's adventures in Kirkwall!
Comments from author:
Varric was my favorite character, so I was really thinking about him when I wanted to write something Dragon Age based. Maybe it was because I had already heard people complain about the reused areas, but it didn't bother me. I just used my knowledge of how places worked that I got in the first act to speed up my searches during the later acts -- I was very, very thorough, and it didn't take that long to do since I knew where they liked to hide stuff. I would have preferred new maps, but if doing that gave them more time and budget to improve the other stuff? I'd take the same map every time for the quality of characters the game offered compared to most RPGs.

I've never been one for changing difficulties in games (fighting games being an exception). I usually play everything on Normal and call it a day when I finish. If I replay something, I still play it on Normal, and just try to enjoy doing things differently.

I'm glad that you liked it, and thank you for the review!

Review:
Dragon Age 2 is AWESOME! Replaying it for the nth time. Personally my biggest complaint for the game is why do they give you two (or three with the prince dlc) rogues that can't pick locks or detect traps? Seriously, you either have to be a rogue yourself or manhandle one of your rogue party-members into learning the skills rogues are MEANT to know. Very annoying.

About the fanfic, it was perfect, Varric being unreliable and the chest-hair comment! XD lol yes.
Comments from author:
I gave Isabela a ring I bought for 88gp in Act 2, which combined with a cunning in the 40s let me pick any lock in the game. Varric ended up with a cunning of 55, and similarly had no trouble. They were both glass cannons, though -- super high Dex and Cunning meant that they did ridiculous damage and were hard to hit, but they had health bars about a third the size of my warriors.

I'm glad you liked it -- Varric was my favorite character, and I knew I had to mention the chest hair after listening to the banter between him and Isabela about it. Thank you for the review!

You don't pan on writing more for this?! But....but you have to! Its such a good idea and it was fun to read. You've got me curious now about what comes next. You should think of doing a series of one-shots for this, seriously this was a good idea for a fic!
Comments from author:
If I did continue it, my idea would be a series of one shots involving each member of the Dragon Age cast -- this would be Varric's one shot. I'd space them out throughout the game to show both how Buffy is changing because of events, and how the plot of the game is changing because of Buffy. Waking up to an inbox full of positive reviews does make me consider writing more, I admit, but I won't promise anything -- I'd need to have some good inspiration. Thank you for taking the time to review, though.

Might want to set this up with someone then to continue it; I'd enjoy hearing Buffy regarded as the greatest warrior in Ages >:).

I would have no problem with someone taking it over, although I confess to not knowing how that would work. Anyway, thank you for the review!

After a great start like that, your not going to write anymore? Ack! I don't think there are any BTVS DA2 xovers that star Buffy besides this one.
Comments from author:
Yeah, I did notice a conspicuous lack during my brief search -- it was one of the reasons I decided to write this. I'll only add more if inspiration really hits though, so I won't say it's impossible, just unlikely.
Thank you for the review!
