Review of chapter "Muffled Execution" from SlowMercury
Sorry I didn't leave a review before now -- I thought I had. This is a great series, and I do hope to see more of it someday. :)

So, I totally love Buffy, Cass and Steph together, even when things are going badly (or are settling in for some long term badness). Also? I love the idea of Cass getting all conjugaty, Steph's explanations for doorbreaking (and actually, Steph being the "diplomatic" half of the partnership)

I'm curious about how Buffy and Lady Shiva would react to each other now; I guess I don't know the relevant Bat canon that well, but I'm assuming Cass hasn't got an actual mother figure there, but in this story she's got an excellent one in Buffy. Buffy at least acknowledged Cain as the "other parent", even if she thought he was a terrible one -- I really wonder what she'd make of Shiva's relationship with Cass, if she knew. And on Lady Shiva's end, when Cass and Steph told Shiva that Cass's mom had been stabbed, I think maybe Shiva should have asked some more questions about the situation because if Shiva does succeed in killing Cass in a few years' time, Buffy will take it *very badly*. And so will Willow. And even if Lady Shiva does just love fighting and all, I suspect threats like Willow are still better handled when you see them coming.

Anyway, great story, great series, sorry for the late review. :)
Comments from author:
Yeah, Cass, Buffy and Steph as a group just makes so much sense that I know I'll be writing more in this series. I've been away from the Buffy fandom for a bit, reading and writing for a few other places, but I'll eventually come back home, full of fresh ideas and ready to write.

I've tossed a lot of thoughts around in my head about how Lady Shiva and Buffy would interact. The closes thing Cass had to a mother figure had been Oracle, but that was really more of a big sister, and they got pretty estranged after a while, so it'll be new territory.

I had Shiva not react much to the revelation about her 'mother' because Shiva likes to be in control, and asking questions means that she isn't. She's going to follow up on her own time, so that the next time she sees Cass she'll know the entire situation. And yes, while Shiva would like to fight Buffy, she isn't a fool about threats like Willow that aren't her kind of opponent -- she's backed down from fighting metahumans in the comics before.

I'm glad that you are enjoying it, and thank you for reviewing!

So Cass knows her day of birth is January the 26. Buffy is born January the 19. So close and yet so far apart.

Cassandra seems to forget that Shiva in this story stopped being a normal human after becoming the chosen representative by Shiva. She's mortal but so were Caleb, Ben and are all the Slayers, witches etc. or possessed ones. In the end they are supernatural beings/creatures. Mortal only means closer to human and easier to kill not like an immortal. I don't know about the evil part with Shiva but if she can kill an innocence without trying to save her(Buffy) in my book she became evil.

Cass has two years to learn that lesson. You have to kill or it will kill you or somebody you care for. Sometimes you don't have another choice. Just like Buffy had to kill Caleb even when he was a mortal chosen by the First. Buffy don't like to kill anything that she consider a close to human in her book but sometimes there is no choice. Superhuman or supernatural if they tried to harm or kill somebody she cares for Buffy will do it. They made their choice and as a bonus they can be slayed.

Love the series and can't wait for more. Got you on tracking so I won't miss a thing.

edit: I know that's what I mean that she will learn the difference between human and Shiva. She will probaly discover that at the last moment. Well I'm glad it will take a lot of stories before she has to do something. Can't wait what you will write next.
Comments from author:
Cassandra had been deeply traumatized by her kill at a young age, and she's still quite young (only 14 here), so being able to even think about killing someone is beyond her at the moment. Also, while she may have dealt with having killed someone better than canon Cass ever did, she still has some unresolved issues. I have a good number of stories planned between here and the fight though, so just wait and see.

These stories take a bit more than a week to write, but my basic plan is to write them between longer stories, so they should hopefully pop up every couple of months until I get the story told (which could be a long time -- I have a lot of ideas for this setting).

Man, the Pieter shout-out made my day - huge JSA fan, and considering they were the biggest collective loss from the DC re-write, good to see they live on. The more subtle approach by not instantly going TEAM-UP WITH DR MID-NITE was smart, heck, even if you never do.
Comments from author:
Thank you, I'm intending to draw him into the series as a significant character, but I wanted to start simple. In general, Buffy's attitude in this about crime fighting will be her general idea -- her job is slaying monsters and stopping supernatural threats, other people can deal with superhuman threats and criminals. Of course, there will be quite a bit of overlap, and plenty of occasions for actual team ups, but don't expect her to ever wear spandex.

As a note to a JSA fan, her brownstone is pretty close to a certain museum like home currently gathering dust...

Very good, and the "midnight surgeon" is an old favorite of mine.
One question though, the two vamps seemed familiar. I thought for a sec it was Lisa & Screech from Saved by the Bell but his name was Samuel. Who were they?
Comments from author:
Actually, the vampires weren't anyone in particular -- I just made them up to setup the scene. I just like how Buffy's vamps often straddle the line between genuinely creepy monsters and humorously inept targets, and tried to replicate that.

Thank you for the review!
