I have a soft spot in my heart for the military. It's a tough life when they have to be deployed.

Review:
A very well done piece. Its one that honors the lost warriors well. Sadly many are now walking on but we need to remember what they did for us all and not waste it. All of our armed forces men and women deserve our deepest gratitude and respect and I think perhaps tributes like this are a fine way to do it. I mean many sacrifieced not just their lives as in dying but relationships and family. How many lost loved ones while fighting to keep us safe? How many never got to say good by to a parent grandparent sibling or lover? We will never know and sometimes that price is far higher then simply dying because they feel they failed the ones they love by not being there. So thank you and know some of us actually appreciate the price paid.

Review:
A thoughtful and well-written tribute to a generation to whom we owe so much.

Thanks for writing this.
Comments from author:
Our family has always considered 'Uncle Mike' a character; now he's a character in a story. I miss him (and his shack) more than I thought I would.

Thanks. Since this one is more personal for me (like my Buffy/Jackson Gibbs one), I think it will become a top ten fav of mine. The stories that will stand the test of time for me and will only need to be edited for mistakes to remain that way.

You made me cry with this one.

Thank you.

It was a good cry. :)
Comments from author:
You just gave me the greatest compliment because (IMO) Memorial stories should make people tear up if they're done right. They can also make people laugh and think, though.

Review:
A fitting tribute to all those who serve(d) and those who have given their lives for our freedoms. And extra points for using the UP in a story, I never see that or encounter anyone who know where/what it is.
Comments from author:
I consider myself a Yooper, once removed, because of all of our summer vacations up the shore. We actually DID go swimming in Ontonagon...despite the frigid temps of the water. It was especially exhilarating to jump in 'da lake' after a sauna.

Review of chapter "They Just Fade Away" from (Current Donor)Clavell
Review:
70 years ago today, a bunch of scared-out-of-their-minds young men somehow convinced themselves to cram themselves into a bunch of floating open-topped sardine cans and flying beer cans and either rush across a bunch of machine-gun-swept and artillery-swept beaches or throw themselves out of perfectly-good airplanes to land in swamps to rid the world of a truly-evil regime, and most of them didn't even ask why, they considered it their duty to their country. It may have been a simpler time back then, with fewer people asking "Why?", but those young men still had a set of clanking testicles to do what they did that day. For all the ones who made it home to tell the tale, and those who didn't, *salute*.

Honestly, I really don't know what to think. Reading the fic made me think, and I think that was your point. It was a nice little reminder of what happened on this day 70 years ago. My heart contracts painfully in my chest when I think about what my grandfather endured in France 70 years ago. He like so many other WWII soldiers is no longer with us, but to the ones who are still with us I will always honor them. From the flags on my front porch, to standing up and giving my seat when a old vet comes into the room. Thank you for the gentle reminder of what is really important.
Comments from author:
It wasn't until my uncle's funeral that I found out he was a WWII vet. Granted, when I was a kid, knowing that wouldn't have impacted me as much as it would now that I'm an adult. It does make me wish that I could go back and ask him for stories about his service.

I have family, most now passed, that served, but only one on the Shores of Normandy - and he is one no longer with us. Salute to all who charged those shores, facing death with the stride of giants.
Comments from author:
I knew from his funeral that my uncle was at the Battle of the Bulge, but didn't know until a couple days ago from a cousin that he also was part of D-Day (101st Airborne).

*Stands up and Salutes* To the men who fought on D-Day. May those that are still around be treated with the respect and honor that they are due. And may the deeds that they did that day NEVER be forgotten!!!!!!
