Review of chapter "A new beginning, or possibly the end." from (Current Donor)DeepBlueJoy
Review:
That one's really dark. I usually don't read any Anita Blake if I can avoid it. No, actually, usually I treat 'Anita Blake' as a form of hazardous material and I edge around it with a great deal of care never letting it get close... So take it as a DEEP compliment that I read this story in my *least* read fandom.

As usual, you've written an intriguing tale. If I read this, then it's only a matter of time before I read ALL your stories. I have a hunger. Yes, I've been reading your stories with such intensity that I forgot to eat breakfast. Can't remember the last time that happened.

Blue

PS - your insights into Spike are similar to mine and I appreciate them. thanks. I love Dru... and your take on her is fascinating. Glad I didn't have to deal too directly with the Hazmat, but now I actually think I have interesting insight into AB. Not enough to tread there again, but interesting, never the less.
Comments from author:
Thank you for your review on this one, especially since the AB fandom isn't your cuppa. It isn't really mine to tell the complete truth. This was another Fic-a-thon where I was writing to try to fulfill a request. I believe I listed all the fandoms that I was familiar with and then when I got my assignment I realized that I actually had to write AB, something I never had played with before. This story could have easily been a novella. I tend to get these grand plot ideas (Intergalactic Yenta is another example) when I am writing for a deadline, and then I have to figure out a way to make it work. I haven't read the last several AB books. The plots have seemed to degenerate into "Anita has lots of sex with lots of improbably beautiful men." *Rolls eyes*

I have fallen prey to reading everything written by a newly discovered author, but I never imagined that someone might have that reaction to my work. I'm very flattered that you have taken the time to read and review so many of my stories. :-)

I should have paid more attention to the angst warning, what a sad ending! Still, I think you did a good job capturing the depths of Spike. I also think you did a good job of balancing Dru on the brink between insanity and evil genius. Good job.
Comments from author:
Thank you so much. I always thought that Spike had a tragic air about him. (Once we saw that he was more than the newest villian of the week.) I'm sorry you missed the angst alert. This is the second review that specifically mentioned the ending, and I'm curious how people are reading it. I kind of lean in one direction, but I intended to write it with three possibilities. It could have been Buffy, or Spike, or both.

Review:
Darkly poetic, regardlss of the fact that it's prose : )

The imagery was vivid and fitting for the characters, and the what-if aspects of the rewritten history were stunningly plausible in a dark and scary sort of way.

and this does pretty much rule out any chance of Spuffy in this timeline, considering the ending there... Not that I mind in the least. I seldom see well-written Spuffy anymore.

Thank you! *blushes* I don't think I've ever been called poetic before! Much of the imagery was surprisingly easy to write. I pictured Spike pouring out his heart, trying to exorcise his obsession with Dru, and it just flowed. Plus, I found my version of Anita truly frightening. I'd certainly never want to meet her. Yes, no Spuffy in this timeline. Maybe if they hadn't met each other right away. Then again, maybe it still would have turned out the same.

Wow, good story, really liked it.
Even if it was kind of a Spike/Drue Pairing ;-)
great angst ... and interesting development with Dru and Anita ...
Thanks so much

I'm so glad you liked it. I was more than a bit worried, and I felt some serious guilt about not adhering to your request in the strictest sense. I came up with the idea of having our vamps steal Anita away when she was still a vulnerable child. I thought there was a ton of potential, and that was part of my problem. My plot bunnies tend to breed fics that should be epics. Of course, I didn't have time to write the epic that this plot truly deserved, so I chose to show a before and after snapshot, and to tell the actual story through Spike's emotional filter. Honestly, I feel like this got away from me a bit, but you don't seem too disappointed. So, I am one very relieved author.
