Actually, one would think that whatever or whoever killed Annie suffered for a long, long time at the hands of her good friend, the Old One known only as Mr. Am.

That is, assuming the comic strip is in along with the musical and movie. Mr. Am was a genial patriarch-looking figure (think Santa Claus if if Claus weren't actually a demon) who claimed to have lived for millions of years and witnessed the rise and fall of numerous civilizations, and was able to back up his claims by excavating ancient cities (with the help of hundreds of willing slaves) and utilizing many forms of lost knowledge. For example, he was able to trick a ruthless gang into opening a box that gave them the mentality of monkeys instead of men.

The implication, of course, was that "Am" was short for "I Am That I Am".

Twisted. Truely twisted. Sick and wrong. Bad in all sorts of ways. And so hysterically funny, when you think about it. It, like, totally explains the musical/movie. =] Thank you, and I hope that the music in your head will let you sleep at least a little bit now.
