"Legion" comes from the Bible. The Gospel according to Mark, chapter 5, verses 6 to 9.
And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
Good Omens is a possiblity as I have a whole bookshelf of Terry Pratchett, but I think it was a TV programme / movie.

Original and fun. Although is the cross already a religious symbol at that point in history? The fish being a more common christian symbol at the time.

It's not really, but that the anachronisms are mainly from the source movie. I set it a few years after Jesus' death to give it a tiny bit of creedence.
Also, you can't hang people from a fish.
