A Long Sea Crossing by pythia

'This isn't a question of duty, or tradition, or even destiny. In the end, the only thing that truly matters is love. No matter what it costs.
That's what really saves the world.'

This sequence of stories starts when Buffy has just been brought back from heaven, and she's struggling to come to terms with it - but the events that follow are very different from the ones that the series gave us. For one thing, this is a world where the old gods abide - and at least one demi-god and his guardian angel are still around, still walking the earth in search of adventure, and doing what they do best.

Defending the innocent, fighting evil and oppression, and enjoying the occasional festival or two.

For another, this is a world where the realms of heaven and hell have been at war for eternity, their endless conflict played out across history - a world where mankind struggles to survive and even angels can fall. In that battle, the Slayer is just one more player on a much larger chess board, but not an unimportant one.

When the creature that gives demons nightmares is once again unleashed upon the world, she, her band of faithfull supporters, the Archon and the demi-god, are the only ones who stand between him and his desperate ambitions.

And the aftershocks of those events will continue to echo down through all their lives ...
"You don't understand," she said. "My best friend brought me back from the dead." "Yeah," he grinned. "That's about how it was with me ..."
