The inspiration behind the LotR story was partly John Carpenter's 'Assault on Precinct 13' and partly 'Zulu'. Curiouslywombat's 'Returnverse' stories also had some influence. An Éomer/Lóthiriel romance with added violence and death on an epic scale - with a humorous postscript.

The BtVS story is a tribute to Elaine Cunningham's characters Liriel Baenre and her friends. They don't get any kind of closure in official Forgotten Realms canon, appearing only in a single trilogy, and there is no possibility of them appearing in any further books after all the changes made to the Realms to accommodate Fourth Edition (Spit! We shall speak of it no more...). And I felt it was a shame for them to disappear, presumed dead, with no more adventures; unfortunately for them those adventures will be on the Hellmouth, with the First Evil rampant, and Liriel has a lot of dead friends to provide material for the First's mind games...
