{blah} thoughts

He didn’t dream while he was asleep, there was nothing but blackness and the odd memory now and then. But it was the same thing over time, memory after memory, blackness after blackness.

Xander looked around and noticed that he was not Earth. “Man I’m going to kill those assholes when I find them.” Xander muttered as he headed for the metal structure a few yards ahead of him. Xander had just reached a set of stairs when he heard the roar of an engine; he looked up and saw a spaceship headed for what looked like a landing strip. ‘Oh shit,’ Xander thought as he raced up the stairs and onto the landing strip and watched as the ship crashed on to the strip and slide all the way into what looked like a hanger. Xander didn’t hesitate and ran towards the ship, to see if anyone needed help. He was about 5 feet away when he saw a spear looking thing go through the windshield, he turned and saw another ship, and though this one was far uglier than the other so he hurried to the ship to see if he could help.

“Wash, baby. Baby, no. Baby, come on. You gotta go. Come on.” A brown skinned woman said as she unstrapped herself and ran to the man that had a spear going through his chest, “We gotta move. Baby, please. We gotta move, baby, come on.”

“Zoë!” a white skinned man yelled as he grabbed the woman around the waist and fell to the side as another spear came through. “Move out! Now!”

Xander was just coming around the side when several people came out. He slid to a stop in front of a man that could have been Grizzly Adams. “Uh, hi.” Some of the people looked up and so did Xander.

“Go. Go.”

“Head inside! You might want to come with us.” Another man said, to Xander, as everyone walked down the ramp and headed inside.

“Uh, okay, no problem.” Xander said as he followed behind a girl, who looked to be seventeen or eighteen. Xander kept looking back to make sure no one was coming.

“Jayne, rearguard.” The man said as he jogged into the tunnel that the brown skinned woman had opened.

As Xander came into a room he found that they were in an octagonal room, with two exits, and he heard what sounded like an elevator coming. “Just peachy.”

“Zoë, what’ve got?”

“Sir…this is a good hold point.” The woman Zoë said as the man came back out of the tunnel.

“We all stay together.”

“No. They have to come through here. They’ll bottleneck, we can thin them out. We get pushed back, there’s the blast doors.” Zoë said as she looked at the man.

“I can rig them so they won’t reopen once they reclose.” A girl about her early twenty’s said as she also looked at the man.

“Shut them and hide until I get--.”

“We need to draw them till it’s done. This is the place. We’ll buy you the time.” Zoë said as she and the guy looked at each other. The guy nodded his head.

“All right, let’s move those crates back there for cover. Make sure they ain’t filled with nothing goes boom.” Grizzly Adams said as he grabbed one end while the boss guy grabbed the other end and started to move it when the second youngest girl asked a question.

“Wait, Wash! Where’s Wash?” everybody stopped what they were doing, including the guy that seemed to be in charge.

“He ain’t coming.” Zoë said as she loaded shotgun shells into her gun. Everyone looked at her for a minute.

“Move the gorramn crates!” Grizzly exclaimed. That seemed to jumpstart everyone in to moving the crates.

“What would really help right now would be Twinkies.” Xander said as he helped a woman, wearing a training bra, move a crate. Everyone stopped what they where doing and looked at him. Xander looked back, “Don’t look at me in that tone of voice; joke in the face of being killed is what I do so you might as well get used to it.” After he said that everyone went back to work.

They were almost done when they heard growling coming from the hall, so Grizzly and Bossman stopped what they were doing and ran to the doorway.

“Tell me you brought them this time.” Bossman said as he looked over at Grizzly. Grizzly smiled and pulled something off his belt and handed it to Bossman while more growling was heard coming from the hallway. Both Bossman and Grizzly twisted the tops and tossed them into the hallway and closed the door, and locked it, while the three nameless girls ducked down behind the crates while Grizzly and Bossman covered their ears, it was when Xander heard an explosion, that he recognized what they had used. Bossman and Grizzly ran behind a huge metal crate and started to push it, so that it blocked the entrance.

“Zoë?” Bossman said as he walked up to her and gentle grabbed her elbow, “Are you here?”

“Do the job, sir.” Zoë said as Bossman un-slung the rifle from his back and handed it to Zoë.

“You hold. Hold till I get back.” Bossman said as he left down the tunnel. Though no one noticed, Xander saw the boss guy look at the woman with the sports bra for a second and then left.

“Captain’s right. Can’t be thinking on revenge if we’re gonna get through this.” Grizzly said as he started to set up some weapons.

“Do you really think any of us are gonna get through this?” Zoë asked.

Grizzly looked at the rest of the people, then looked back at Zoë, “I might.”

Xander couldn’t help it, he burst out laughing, “Oh, my god. You two remind me of me and Cordelia.” Xander laughed a little bit more then looked around to see if he could spot a potentially good weapon, he didn’t notice the little girl looking at him, and he didn’t until she gasped out loud, then everyone was looking at her, everybody noticed that her eyes were glazed over.

“Xander. This is ridiculous. We need to talk.”

The girl smiles a sinister smile, “Been waitin’ for you to jump my bones.”

“Get off me.”

“Is that what you really want? We both know what you really want. You want danger, don’t cha? You like your men dangerous.”

“You’re in trouble, Xander. You are infected with some hyena thing, it’s like a demonic possession!”

“Dangerous and mean, right? Like Angel. Your Mystery Guy. Well guess who got mean.”

“Do you know how long…I’ve waited…until you’d stop pretending that we aren’t attracted…Until Willow…stops kidding herself…that I could settle with anyone but you?”

“Look, Xander, I don’t wanna hurt you…”

“Now do you want to hurt me? Come on, Slayer. I like it when you’re scared, the more I scare you, the better you smell.”

Xander was about to say something when,

“Hurry up. We gotta get him locked up somehow before he comes to.”

“Oh, my god, Xander! What happened?”

“I hit him.”

“With what?”

“A desk. He tried his hand at felony sexual assault.”

“Oh, Buffy, the hyena in him didn’t…”

“No. No, but it’s safe to say that in his animal state his idea of wooing doesn’t involve a Yanni CD and a bottle of Chianti. There that oughtta hold him.”

When it looked like she was going to continue, Xander didn’t stop her, the voice that came out sounded very British,

“I’ve been reading on my, uh, animal possession, and I cannot find anything anywhere about memory loss afterwards.”

“Did you tell them that?”

“Your secret dies with me.”

“Shoot me. Stuff me. Mount me.”

Xander was about to go back to looking for a weapon, when the first words out of her mouth stopped him cold,

“Visiting hours are over.” Her voice changed to another’s voice

“Well, I’m pretty much family.”

“Yeah. Why don’t you come back during the day? Oh, gee, no, I guess you can’t.”

“If I decide to walk into Buffy’s room, do you think for one microsecond that you could stop me?”

“Maybe not. Maybe that security guard couldn’t either. Or those cops…or the orderlies… But I’m kinda curious to find out. You game?”

“Buffy’s White Knight. You still love her. It must really eat you up that I got there first.”

“You’re gonna die. And I’m gonna be there..”

“Tell her I stopped by.”

Xander looked at the girl, “Who told you that?”

When it looked to Xander like she was done she spoke again,

“Hello, nasty. Less than two minutes. Dumb guy. Little bomb. How hard can it be?”

“It just got harder.”

“I’m not leaving till that thing’s disarmed.”

“Then I guess you’re not leaving. I’m gonna carve you up and serve you with gravy. You piss me off, boy. Now you pay the price. First, the eyes, then the tongue. I’m gonna break every one of your fingers.”

“You gonna do all that in forty-nine seconds? I know what you’re thinkin’. Can I get by him? Get up the stairs, out of the building, seconds ticking away…I don’t love your chances.”

“Then you’ll die, too.”

“Yeah, looks like. So I guess the question really is…who has less fear.”

“I’m not afraid to die. I’m already dead.”

“Yeah, but this is different. Being blowed up isn’t walking around and drinking with your buddies dead. It’s little bits being swept up by a janitor dead, and I don’t think you’re ready for that.”

“Are you?”

“I like the quiet.”

“Good boy. I don’t think I wanna be seeing you on campus anymore Jack.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Harris. The first time you turn your back…”

After she was done speaking the girl fainted.

“River!” the man shouted as he ran to the downed girl. Everyone one was silently looking at River, until there was banging on the door. That brought the girl awake.

“The Reavers. They are all made up of rage.” River cried out.

“It’s okay. It’s okay.” the guy said, trying to reassure her.

“I can’t shut them up.” River said as the guy tried to calm her down.

The banging grew till what ever was out there was banging on the windows.

“Stay low.” the guy said as he eased her into a sitting position.

“She picked sweet bung of a time to go helpless on us.” Grizzly growled as he and the rest of the people got into position.

“Jayne and I take the first wave. Nobody shoots unless they get past our fire.” Zoë said as she looked over at the others, including Xander.

“I hate to say this but I don’t have a weapon.” Xander said as he looked at the others.
Jayne growled at Xander and tossed him a gun, “You lose Vera and I’ll kill you myself.”

“I didn’t plan on going out like this.” The girl said as she looked straight ahead, “I think we did right, but…”

“No, I never planned…anything.” Guy said as he looked at the girl in overalls. “I just wanted to keep River safe. Spent so much time on Serenity ignoring anything…that I wanted for myself.” Guy said as he looked down, then back up at the Overalls and continued speaking, “My one regret in all of this…is never being with you”

“With me. You mean to say, as…Sex?” Overalls asked as her eyes gleamed with hope.

The guy nodded, “I mean to say.”

The door squeaked and Overalls looked over at it, then back at the guy, “Hell with this. I’m gonna live.” As she cocked the gun in her hand and pointed it at the door. Xander couldn’t help but give a short laugh, “Could you at least wait until we’re done here to talk about sex?” A few people laughed, including Zoë.

The banging continued as they all waited for the inevitable to happen. The banging only got worse.

“Okay, quick question, what the hell are this things?” Xander asked as he looked over at Zoë.

“Their called Reavers and their humans that was affected by an air processor on the planet Miranda.” Zoë said as she looked over at the stranger.

Xander was going to say something when the door got busted open and Zoë shot at the deranged human.

{Zoë said that they where humans, I thought they where vamps.} Xander thought as he watched Zoë stand up and head toward the door, when he felt a familiar presence in his mind.

{Oh, looks like that woman has a death wish.} The hyena said as she watched Zoë through Xander’s eyes.
{What the hell are you doing back?}

{You subconsciously called out to me pup.} Hyena said as she turned to look at Xander.

{No I didn’t.}

{Fine, but if you need me just call.} Hyena said as she lopped off.

Xander was blasted back to the present by Jayne yelling.

“Zoë, gorrammit!”

Xander shot a Reaver as it tried to head his way. He continued to shoot Reavers as they started to come in more quickly. Xander caught movement in the corner of his eye and watched Zoë fight off some Reavers. When he saw Zoë get knocked down, he jumped up and ran to her defense.

A Reaver was about to slice Zoë down her back when it’s hand was caught.

“You know it’s not nice to try and kill a woman as nice as Zoë.” Xander said as he introduced the Reaver to his fist. The Reaver went down.

“Get down!” Jayne yelled at the stranger, and without a pause he did just that, and Jayne started firing the weird looking gatling gun. Several Reavers went down.

When Xander ducked down he grabbed Zoë by the arm, “Next time don’t try to go Wild Bunch on us.” Xander said as he started to drag Zoë back behind the crates, under the bullets that Jayne was firing. He was just dragging Zoë behind the crates when a bullet hit him in the shoulder, making him fly back and hitting his head on the wall and knocking him out.
