Chapter 3 Smile Bright
Buffy's smile felt plastered on as she nodded her thanks to the oh so cheerful nurse and began to feel out the papers that had been handed to her. It had been awhile since she had had to take responsibility for another person in this capacity but it wasn't something you forgot and despite the time that had passed she still knew the necessary information that a guardian should know.
She gave the clipboard back to the nurse at her desk exchanging yet another painfully bright smile and wearily made her way back to the hospital room that had been prepared for a high profile patient.
Remembering the reporters she had glimpsed flooding the parking lot a bitter smile touched her lips, she had definitely stepped into a different world and now there was no going back. She saw the two teenagers playing cards on the hospital bed and the nature of that smile changed, not that she would.
Logan glanced up and spotted her a sardonic grin moving into place as he threw down a card "So the kind and gracious sister returns, tell me how are my fans?"
Buffy moved into the room grinning "I remember hearing gambling was one of your talents."
Logan grimaced looking down at his hands "Well yes it is but when it comes to the game of goldfish I am getting my ass handed to me by sweet and innocent little sister."
At that both Dawn and Buffy snorted and Logan looked between the two confused. Buffy just shared a smile with Dawn "He called you innocent."
Dawn nodded saying sadly "Poor boy, I think he got hit really hardly on the head." she sat cross legged on the bed across from Logan a mischievous grin peeking out of the seriousness.
Logan glared at the both of them picking up the cards from the bed and the ones Dawn handed him and began to shuffle them gritting out "You two are a hoot, you should do stand up." he snuck a quick suspicious glance at Dawn you gave him her best impression of the little girl she had been.
The cut above his eye had now received stitches and there was bandages on his ankles and his ribs were wrapped. The first thing Buffy had done was taking him to the hospital and would make sure that the extent of his injuries went into his defense.
He had told her that he hadn't killed the guy they were accusing him of and Buffy believed him, she had to believe him because she was going to fight for him.
"Miss Echolls," one of the nurses inquired nervously and Buffy winced at the name but put on another cheerleader smile.
"A Veronica Mars is here to see Mr. Echolls, we told her that the family wasn't accepting visitors but she was quite insistent and the guard caught her trying to sneak in."
Buffy heard a snort and looked over a Logan questionably. He just grinned "Usually she doesn't get caught, she must really be using her touch."
Buffy raised her eyebrows "Friend of yours?"
A tender smile touched his lips "Among other things yeah. He looked down at his hospital garb and winced "I don't exactly look my best but she's seen me looking worse," he mused "recently actually."
Buffy rolled her eyes and turned back to the nurse "It's okay, I think Logan's up for this visitor."
The nurse left and Logan smirked "Boy am I." Buffy glared at the joke and watched as Logan started to deal the cards more efficiently than she would have liked. One thing was for sure, her brother was about as innocent as the rest of her family.
